Match report
Heads & Tails members who played for the Erratics:
A.N.Other 1 - Roger Carpenter
A.N.Other 2 - Bill Horner
...meaning that nine Erratics played ten Heads & Tails. And the outfield was fast!
At the time when I should have written this report I remember that I was struggling to think of anything remarkable to comment on about this match, except for the fact that both sides were short of players in the holiday season and that the outfield was very fast. Now actually writing it three months late, I am, of course, finding it even more difficult.
However, the captains having agreed how to share out the available players, the Erratics were sent out to bat first. Lee Grant and Tim Fawcett got the score moving on well before they both had to retire after passing 30 and a swift scoring partnership by Chris Ferro and Jonathan Kirby towards the end of the innings put us at 143 for 5, which might have seemed defensible.
But it was not to be. Heads & Tails first three batsmen all reached their retirement limit, followed by the next two each reaching 20. There was not a single wicket to be taken and the inevitability of the eventual result became more and more apparent, unstoppable, in fact, with the winning side needing only just over 16 overs to confirm our fears.
As my French grandchildren were visiting that week, I took the opportunity of showing them a real cricket match, instead of cricket on the beach. Whilst we were fielding I asked the opposition if they would mind if my 8-year old bilngual grandson kept the scoreboard uptodate. "That would be fine, but will he put the numbers up in French or English?" they quipped.
In the pub after enjoying the splendid food laid on, our opponents asked us whether it would be possible in 2023 to get an evening match at our new ground. I can now report that that has been arranged for Wednesday 12 July.
