Scorecard

Dartington v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 11 Sep 2022 at 1.30pm
Match was Drawn

Match report A match in time; an unseasonal report.
By John Curtis (written rather late, submitted even later).

Six hundred and four.

A record.

Neither runs scored nor runs conceded, but years gone by, abandoned in summer fields and lost in Winter books by the Erratics representative eleven at Dartington on one bright September day.

Martin Wright had insisted that the computation be made.

L’Addition S’il Vous Plait.

We could pay the bill - or we could make a break for the Fire Exit while they’re arranging the cakes –

Run boys, Run!

The Tics had ‘put out’ a strong side on paper,

Dartington however had evidently not received the request re. our preferred surface, that vellum perfection with a hint of baby’s bottom bounce on which your average Erratic thrives, and had prepared a ‘characterful’ pitch instead, a green-coloured affair on which they themselves batted with impressive discipline against some noticeable lateral movement . In hindsight, it was as if some intimate wisdom about the place had led them to envision the likely progress and destination of the match and that this witchery had enabled them to set a runs target which they had conceived as adequate to the task of overmatching their opponents. A target of, say, 200,

They scored…200.

They had even accounted for the determined 5 wicket haul delivered by Captain Fraser Chave, an effort of genuine resilience in the face of some muscularly assertive batting

If it hadn’t been for scores of 37 and 47 from Chris Ferro and Chris Cook , what proved to be a contested match may have proved considerably less entertaining for the spectator, (a gentleman apparently known to some, but alas, not to your reporter).

His dog was not in attendance.

Despite the lack of genuine jeopardy, there was some entertainment along the way. I particularly recall two Erratics weaving up the incline after the ball, as if intent on demonstrating through the medium of dance how to tie some obscure Mariner’s knot.

Good grounds for a winter smile. (Pause for such and, in gratitude, no mention of a Monkey’s fist)

Summer days come back to us in Wintertime, perhaps not warm but always bright.
