Match report
The problem with Fraser Chave’s remarkable statistical analysis of the Erratics history is it starts taking you down ever deeper rabbit holes of investigation. And so it was, as we prepared to visit Feniton, I checked how many times we had played them since our formation in 1934. The answer was this was to be just our second encounter; the first being last year. I should have stopped there but got terribly distracted. It struck me just how few teams beginning with F we had met in our 88 year reign. Seven. And of those, two – Feniton and Filleigh – are very recent fixtures. Weirder still they are the only ones in Devon. Prior to that all our F games were against sides from outside the county. The F roll of honour is Flamingoes (Hampshire), Four Elms (Kent), Foresters (Sussex) and Frampton and Frocester (both Gloucestershire). No doubt an Erratics place name specialist will advise on the shortage of F teams in Devon.
Still, such statistical meanderings are relatively harmless. It could be a lot worse - imagine getting hooked on visiting football and cricket grounds. Well if you did then a journey to Acland Park is a double tick – home as it is to both Feniton Football and Cricket Clubs. It was good to meet Harry’s Dad, Phil Everett, at the match. Phil still occasionally turns out for Feniton FC and was a non league legend in his heyday. He played over 500 times for Tiverton Town, scoring over 350 goals. He played in three FA vase finals at Wembley and was ‘Non League Player of the Year’ in 1997/8.
Sport is clearly in the Everett genes and Harry was soon proving the point. Skipper Lee Grant won the toss and confidently chose to bat first. In next to no time opener Harry was back in the pavilion – not because he was out but due to a rapid fire retirement score. Lee grinned and said ‘I thought he would do that’.
Fellow opener Anuj Tiwari made a busy 12 before a mid order collapse started to nullify the excellent start which had been aided by a couple of bizarre bits of fielding when balls had somehow been thrown backwards for bonus runs. But the stutter was brief. Richard Lindsay is in great form and fresh from 39 at Bridford was brutal against some very decent bowling – hitting two massive sixes off their skipper in the same over before retiring. Skipper Lee (31 not out) also dashed to retirement as the Erratics score headed north of par.
Mark Hailwood took advantage of some time at the crease to score an efficient run a ball 10. The tailenders were clever enough not to hang around and so enable Harry and Rich to return and continue to make hay. Harry ended on 39 not out (7 fours) and Richard 45 not out (6 fours and 2 sixes) in a total of 149-8 off the allotted 20 overs.
Feniton took their turn at the crease with the light worsening and dark forbidding clouds moving in. The Erratics kept it very tight with Hailwood and Tim Fawcett each bowling two tight overs. It didn’t seem to be Tim’s evening as two chances were spilled. Lee decided enough was enough and some leadership needed to be shown. With the ball smashed hard and fast to his left he stuck out a hand and took a miraculous one handed catch. Tim had the wicket he deserved.
Feniton started to hit out but having reached 37 off 5.2 overs the rain started. Their skipper proposed we call it a day – ‘Trust me, when you can’t see East Hill from here then we are in trouble’.
This led to much discussion in the Erratics dressing room about run rates. Mark Phillips wondered what the Lewis Hamilton method would have resulted in. Mind you Mark had been having a troubled day. He arrived at the ground to ask if a reserve was available as he’d left his shirt and boots behind. Don’t you just love the Erratics!
Anyway with more time on our hands due to the early finish there was time to move on to the letter G. And we have played even less of them than F. Just three single games against three teams. Another one for the letterati to explain.
