Ashburton v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 06 Jul 2022 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 7 Wickets
Match report
A.N.Other was Jayashubhakar Nallala
Reporting by Matt Crawford
The game at Ashburton was enjoyable but probably not one which will rival any match of the season candidates. A low scoring affair, and apart from a single retiree from either side, the top scorer for both teams were extras.
Fraser lost the toss for the first time this season and the Erratics were sent in to field, looking to make up for a large defeat last season where 74 runs were chased with more than 5 overs to spare (on that occasion extras helped out by donating 20 of the Erratics total). But on Wednesday evening the Ashburton youngsters struggled to get going on an unusual pitch with a significant ridge at one end. Lee and Anuj kept things tight from the get-go, the latter sending two batters back to the pavilion. Fraser continued the containment, costing only a couple of runs and a further wicket with each of his two overs in the spell.
Phil didn’t provide any respite after another dismissal with his third ball, at this stage the innings was probably around a 7 on the crumbling collapse scale going from 0 to Conservative government. Ashburton’s number 6 hung around after everyone around him was departing despite our pleas for his removal, and he thankfully resigned, correction, retired for a well-made 34.
Our new Nallala created some opportunities with the ball but the last couple of wickets came via run outs as the hosts tried to eke out some final runs as the evening shadows started to drift across the ground, finally finishing on 83, having been 23-5.
As we have become increasingly accustomed to this season, Richard opened and retired swiftly, picking the gaps in the field well while keeping us above the required rate. Unusually, our old Nallala was bowled cheaply, and then resulted in the unfortunate demise of Jon who edged into his pad and was sent on his way prematurely, judged lbw.
The dot balls had begun to catch up with the runs, and it was down to Lee and Hugh to get us home. Hugh had a master plan though, unbeknownst to us on the side-lines, where our captain began to get nervous. By blocking and scratching tentatively, Hugh drew the fielders in closer and closer, until successive fours surprised all of us to win the game! Before the hosts locked up, there was just enough time for Hugh to find his accountant and award him with some South African Champagne and for the rest of us to make do with a Doombar in the pavilion bar.
