Newton Poppleford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 21 May 2023 at 1.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 8 Wickets

Match report Just a couple of weeks ago , biblical quantities of rain were dumped on Newton Poppleford and surrounding villages in a matter of hours .Local news reports flashed up dramatic images of fields morphed into lakes and roads into rivers. Some remnants of the deluge were still visible but Sunday could not have provided a greater contrast. The playing area having thoroughly dried out , sun shining with an accompanying, refreshing breeze the Erratics headed out for a bowl.

Nigel and Mark H. got things underway . Bowling a nagging length, subtly varying pace and an occasional bit of wobble ,it wasn't long before Mark produced one of his near unplayable off stump bail trimmers. This time no damage to the timber was done. I mention this because an almost identical delivery a couple of days previously had resulted in a bail being reduced to a scattering of splinters over the outfield of Newton st. Cyres. The introduction of Anuj and the injection of some pace into the bowling attack quickly brought about another wicket. A lovely catch taken by Jonathan. The ball hit firmly and low ,expertly snaffled just inches from the turf by the Skipper at short extra cover. In his next over Anuj again had the batsman driving a ball at J.K in the covers and demonstrating that he can take catches at full stretch with equal assuredness, plucked it neatly from the sky above his head .

About this time Newton Poppleford's number five was at the crease looking increasingly comfortable. Furtive murmurrings amongst pockets of Erratics about the vast quantity of runs that he had accumulated against us over the years including 160 last year meant that something beyond the ordinary would be required to unseat him . Sure enough this came in the form of a viciously rotating topspinner from Ben Y-B ,who having settled into the groove from ball one produced a game changing delivery leaving the bewildered batsman looking forlornly down at his pegged back off stump. Next delivery another wicket and with ratcheting excitement fielders were ushered towards the action for the hat trick delivery. Not to be. Jonathan did however complete a hat trick of catches with a blistering take off Ben's bowling who finished with superb figures of 4 for 9. Jonathan himself however, finished with split webbing in his right hand and a trip to hospital. Let's hope for a speedy recovery.

Newton P. all out for 122 . The arrival of Mr. Whippy's ice cream van during the tea interval allowed for some gastronomic nostalgia as melting 99 flakes were enjoyed all round. Following the demise of our original captain , freshly anointed leader,Fraser, sent Richard and Nigel out to chase down the total. Considering most encounters between these teams have seen scores well in excess of 200 it felt eminently gettable and so it proved. Although Rich mis-timed one of his trade mark shots down the ground and Matt was really unlucky to drag a wide one back into his stumps, Nigel and incoming Fraser managed to steer the Erratics home to victory with an 80 + partnership. Sunny beer garden for sandwiches and potatoes done two ways to complete the day.
