So another Thursday night game arrives and what a setting. Windslade Park - framed by its elegantly refined yet brutalist restaurant and conference centre. Fitting adjectives to describe the often stylish yet ruthless gladiatorial contest that took place on that balmy early Summer’s evening. After arriving by car, bike and in Yarde-Buller’s case personal helicopter the team were led out onto the pitch by Captain Hailwood.

Grant and Rutherford opened the attack - bowling with accuracy and guile to keep the first four overs admirably tight. Next up, Carr and Crawford saw off the openers in their respective spells which unfortunately led to Johnson and Kasim forging an unbreakable partnership full of well-placed shots and frankly laughable big hitting. One six, in particular, travelled so high and far that it was lucky Yarde-Buller’s chopper had previously departed. Former England rugby player Tom Johnson was clearly untroubled by the smaller, rounder ball. Thankfully, both players did the dutiful thing and retired leaving only Burton as the main obstacle to our eager bowling attack. Special credit to captain Mark Haliwood for staying true to the spirit of friendly cricket by giving all ten of this motley crew the chance to bowl. While there may have been the odd expensive over it led to some special individual moments. Not least watching John Curtis take his customary wicket for the season and in doing so already booking his place for the 2024 season.

Chasing a very competitive target of 150, Erratics set to work. Tiwari took on the bowling attack with customary savagery - most notably hitting a full toss six that (insert weak helicopter joke here). He was ably supported by Yarde-Buller who was unfortunate to see himself caught in a tail spin and run out. Krups took to the task well smashing 4 boundaries and with half the match gone all projections were for a very tight finish. With Tiwari retiring, Grant smashed a quick-fire 25 before cruelly seeing his bails removed by Haylor. Time was running out. One last big partnership may have been enough to take us over the line but with Perkin gone looking to clear the rope, it was clear that the miracle of Winslade was fading away. Chave and Crawford looked to haul us over the line but the boundaries just wouldn’t come and defeat was confirmed in the last over. All in all an exciting end to a game in which Erratics once again epitomised the spirit of this wonderful game.
