Fraser’s Final First?
Fraser has attained almost all available achievements as an Erratic, but a hat-trick has eluded him…. that is until the 6th June 2023. The Erratics’ trip to Feniton was not going to see a repeat of 2022’s rain-abandoned fixture, as blue sky dominated the vast vista across east Devon to accompany the whiff of poopy agriculture. The Grant-Chave combination opened the bowling for the Erratics after Feniton won the toss and elected to bat. Accurate bowling and cautious batting kept the run rate down, on a quick and hard pitch and outfield that we’ve come to expect there over the past few years. Fraser picked up his first of four wickets by trapping the opener LBW. While, not for the first time this season, Lee bowled two-in-two, giving him the opportunity for a hat-trick ball, which despite a decent delivery, was unfortunately denied by a bat inconveniently blocking it.
As the innings progressed, Feniton gradually got back into the game with a mixture of quick singles and shots being rewarded with boundaries across the quick but lumpy outfield. Tim took a sharp caught and bowled, clasping onto the mis-timed straight drive in his follow-through, before Feniton’s lower order gradually accumulated runs. Fraser’s hat-trick (the 17th Erratics hat-trick) came in the final over. The first wicket was bowled to break a growing partnership, followed by BYB taking a decent catch at cow corner as a low powerful hit seemed to accelerate towards him in the air. The scruffy bat-pad-stumps ricochet, or allegations of the delivery being an overstep(!), will not overshadow the statistical significance of the third wicket in the final 3 balls of the Feniton Innings, leaving Chave with impressive figures of 4-8 and Erratics requiring 127 for victory.
The reply began steadily, just about keeping up with the required run rate against some accurate bowling over the opening spells, before Lee (20) and Matt (7) were dismissed off the bowling of Feniton’s skipper Buckland, as the pitch began to mis-behave, spitting length balls up and sideways. Two Erratics reached retirement scores, Lindsay finally recapturing some of last season’s scoring, while Nallala maintained his fine form this season by hitting a rapid 30 from just 21 balls, including a huge six over mid-on. The mid and lower order found it challenging to get to grips with the wearing wicket but stayed in touch with the target. As the global audience stayed fixated on the WhatsApp feed, the Erratics debated how they could monetise the coverage through streaming (maybe a premium international subscription?). Perhaps that’s part of the beauty of Teign Valley – no internet or phone coverage gives rare escapism and the opportunity to disconnect. With 8 required from the final 9 balls, shots were mis-timed, singles were scrambled, extras were awarded, run-outs were actioned, and the scores amicably tied at the end.
Although a tie seemed a reasonable result based on performances, the Erratics were left reflecting on close-calls and what-ifs that might have saved or gained a single run: The unfortunate over-throws after impacting the stumps during attempted run-outs, whether Hailwood made his ground when he was adjudged run-out, whether we should have nicked more quick singles at the start of the innings. Feniton did well to demonstrate the affable ethos of friendly cricket by giving overs to their range of young bowlers, a characteristic that has grown over the recent fixtures against the Erratics. Therefore, perhaps the tie (Erratic’s 25th) was the “right” outcome based on the match’s sporting nature.
