Stoke Gabriel v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 11 Jun 2023 at 2.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 4 Wickets
Match report
Ahh, the beautiful hamlet of Aish. Nestled in the hillocks of the (South) Hams. A little hideaway between Paignton and Totnes. Also the home of Stoke Gabriel Cricket Club.
Fraser was captain for the day and lost the toss, Stoke Gabriel decided to bat first. The Stoke team included some youngsters so it was decided that the batsman would retire at 50 (if reached) to give the youth a chance to wield the bat, and if need be, return to the crease at the end of the innings.
It was scorchio out there, sun tan lotion and hats were a necessity. The game was well attended too, with Stoke offering a £15 a head Sunday Roast to the ‘Pensioners Of Aish’ (not a doom-metal band) and keeping the bar open all day. Lovely to see …. OK. Back to the game.
Anuj and Oscar opened the bowling. Anuj from the Pavilion End and Oscar from the Hoyle Lane End. In the third over, Stoke were 17 for 2 after Anuj bowled a double wicket over, a c&b and a clean bowl. The following over, the third wicket fell with wicketkeeper Lee holding onto a nick from a fast ball by Oscar. Stoke Gabriel then built on the score with Pringle finding the gaps and sprinkling the boundary rope. Pringle was the first to retire at 50.
Paul Carr and Fraser took over the bowling attack. Measured bowling from Fraser, getting his first wicket in the 12th over and the scoreboard reading 68 for 4. Phil came on to join Fraser in the bowling, getting the 5th wicket. Superb hands from Ben Yarde-Buller out on the boundary at deep square. At drinks, Stoke Gabriel were 97 for 6 and Erratics changed wicketkeepers, Matt replacing Lee as Lee fancied a bowl. 97 for 6 soon became 97 for 7 as one of Phil’s magic balls was once again caught. This time it was safe hands from Fraser. As Stoke started looking for the boundaries, Chris Cook came on to replace Fraser at the Pavilion end and claimed an early wicket with Martin Wright catching a high ball somewhere around point. At 150 for 9 Chris bowled another beauty with Anuj being the safe pair of hands out on long on. Pringle came back to bat again with 6 overs to go … after his first innings it did seem likely that Stoke Gabriel could be heading for the 200 mark (or thereabouts). But after only 2 balls Pringle fell foul to a shorter ball from Chris, reaching Ben (super hands) Yarde-Buller out at extra cover. Lee never got to bowl.
Stoke Gabriel were all out after 28.5 overs with the total of 154 (coincidently Wire’s third and greatest album … in my opinion).
After tea and as the well fed pensioners started to drift off into the mid-afternoon sunlight, Ben Yarde-Buller and Jon Perkin walked out to opening the batting. Out for only 4 runs Jon was replaced by Lee. Lee and Ben put on a partnership of 68 before Lee fell to a LBW off Tolley’s bowling. Martin Wright fell for 2 before Ben had to retire collecting a magnificent 50 (including two sixes and seven fours). Oscar came and was bowled first ball, a devilish ball from Tolley who was probably having one of those ‘games of the season’. He also got Matt out for 19 with an LBW shout.
Fraser and Chris Cook finshed the game off and with six overs to go and 11 runs needed, Fraser hit a beautiful boundary followed by a nifty two runs and the bowler giving a boundary of byes, Fraser hit the last ball of the over for two and the game was over. Erratics won by 4 wickets .. and the bar stayed open.
