Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 58 Runs
Match report
Reporting? by Matt Crawford
Rust is caused by exposure of a metal to air and moisture in the atmosphere.
Unchecked rust can spread rapidly. In certain scenarios this can compromise structural integrity.
Delamination is the most severe form of corrosion in steel. Delamination is the separation of steel into individual layers, caused by high levels of corrosion. A loss of cohesion between the layers causes the steel to break apart and "flake" off, resulting in a loss of section size. This can have devastating consequences.
On the 9th of May 2024, the Erratics played Tipton St. John. It was a rather one sided affair. It was your correspondent's first game of the season, one in which he felt extremely rusty, perhaps from an extreme exposure to moisture in the preceding months which felt like endless rain.
Having allowed a ball to run through his legs in comedic fashion in the field, and a general feeling of unpreparedness, this rustiness began to spread to his teammates.
In the last two T20 games against Tipton, 88 was enough to win in 2022 and coincidently exactly the same was scored to tie the game in 2018. On this installment however, particularly with the help of Lewis Davies who smashed his way to retirement from 30 off 10 balls, Tipton managed a mighty 131.
Full delamination was just about prevented, the layers of the Erratics were held together by the batting of Fraser Chave. With 8 Erratics scoring 3 or fewer, and no one else reaching double figures (except wides), Chave Junior mustered 29 to prevent full structural failure. Accompanied by our defiant debutant Matthew Hewson, the final total of 73 gave the Erratics a slight aesthetic patina.
The 2023 fixture was a day game, where Tipton beat the Erratics by 158 runs. While corrosion usually builds up slowly over time, buckling is a phenomenon which occurs suddenly, often with extreme consequences such as a catastrophic collapse of a structure.
There is no way back from buckling. However corrosion can be repaired by removing visible rust and applying protective coatings. Or in this instance, getting back on the field and blowing the cobwebs away!
