Ide v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 07 Jun 2024 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 27 Runs

Match report My apologies for the tardiness of my match report – just the four months in the making!

Ide were our hosts for our latest T20 game – we should be getting the hang of it by now, it was our fourth game in seven days. On arrival we found a tactical ploy of keeping the grass long, so as to force us to play aerially. Erratics took the opportunity to set a score and after an early setback, Anuj came out swinging, enticed by the short boundary. He was served a full toss that was smashed to the boundary but, alas, was well held by a jubilant fielder. There was comment that the juicy pie should have been called a ‘no-ball’ for height, (and possibly should have been!) but the standing umpire, after discussion with the square-leg umpire, accepted it as a legitimate ball. Out! After a tumble of wickets for not-a-lot, Matthew Hewson came out to steady the ship, accompanied by Lee Grant, who’s own form of defence is attack, biffed a not-out 30 off 13 balls, including 2x fours and 3x sixes (how many more sixes will he hit this season?) With the help of 21 extras, Erratics closed on 99.

Could we defend 99 on a ground with a really short boundary on one side? Well, an old adage in cricket is ‘not to judge a score until both sides have had a bat’ (Ed - which is a bit pointless in a one innings match?) So, Ide came out to bat with real intent and started peppering the short boundary – oh dear this could be a short game. A Ash scored 25* and had a few partnerships but in the end it wasn’t enough, Ide losing 8 of their wickets for 4 runs off the bat. Fraser ended with ‘match-winning’ figures of 4 for 3 along with 2 catches to add to his six when batting to cap a MOM performance. Notable comment has to be made about the ‘enthusiastic’ home crowd – lovely to see, even for village cricket.

After the game our hosts kindly provided chilli n nachos washed down with a beer, lovely!

NB Apparently Ide has been a graveyard for positive results for the Erratics in the past, so a good low-scoring win secured today. Next season (please book us in Mark, please!) Ide are moving to….an adjacent field but whatever the track is like and however long the grass is I’m sure Ide will provide a friendly, competitive fixture once again.
