Chagford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 14 Aug 2024 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 9 Wickets

Match report Hugh Sheridan wants a fun-guy*, in fact any fun-guy he can find. He even invited Erratics to join him in his quest in the undergrowth. Apparently, the rural nature around Chagford affords itself to this activity. And he wasn’t wrong, he offered to show me his ‘wares’ in the car! After the game he got them out for all to see, there was one that had a Black Cap and another with a prickly beard. He looked rightly pleased and was taking them home to enjoy.

Cricket is played with 11 players but unfortunately, we or should I say, the rest of our team entered the field with a player missing. So, apologies that yours truly was late from work and missed the opening over. According to the scorebook S Dorset (Tim Fawcett) bowled the over conceding a miserly 4 runs, If Captain, J Kirby Esq, had a full complement of fielders, perhaps there may have been a catch or run-out or S Dorset may have bowled a maiden, so apologies Tim if I affected your stats. The reason I raise this is when we actually had a full team out, the eleventh fielder managed to take a catch or more accurately, keep the ball from touching the ground to assist bowler, Dr M Hailwood, to the first of his two wickets. BYB came on first change and was later heard to exclaim (ish) ‘I hate it when batters don’t understand leg-spin bowlers, they just think we’re slow bowlers’, ruing the onslaught he received, alas there’s not going to be much joy bowling on an astro-deck in a T20 Ben. Skipper JK marshaled the field to good affect, and this resulted in two excellent run-outs – both involving Krups – and we could have had potentially, another three. Name check to batters Hughes and Stanbury for retiring not out. Chagford scored a run a ball 118.

Erratics reply started in a hurry and carried on in that momentum, Grant 29*, Krups 22, Sheridan 18* & Crawford 27* getting the job done in 14 overs. In fact, only 28 runs (scored off the bat) were not scored in boundaries, which is astonishing as the boundary edge was nearly in another parish. Whilst in the field, it was surmised that no sixes would be scored today, but BYB being the spinner that he is lured Lee in with a bet (£50) that he couldn’t land the ball in the Audi Coupe parked in the car park with its roof down. Lee – as Lee would – duly obliged and did hit two sixes….but thankfully missed the car!

After the game, the clubhouse turned into a pizza parlour, with very generous amounts being served up. There was also some kind of pyjama cricket on the telly, I don’t think it’ll catch on.

AOB: Oliver Kirby made his first appearance of the season. Welcome.
As it’s the pen-ultimate midweek game (apart from tour) the weather couldn’t have been more perfect, with bright sunshine bathing Chagford’s beautiful and very picturesque ground. Special thanks to the ladies from Chagford who scored both innings.

Putmo!
