Ottery St Mary v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 11 Aug 2024 at 1.30pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 2 Wickets

Match report Ottery St Mary is a proper cricket club that exudes a class above most of the grounds we play at. Formed in 1858 it has a large pavilion, enormous outfield, electronic scorebox, advertising hoardings and nets with a bowling machine. A photo in the clubhouse confirms it was good enough for County cricketers as Somerset visited for a Brian Rose benefit match in 1983. Joel Garner, Viv Richards and Vic Marks are among the star studded Cidermen.

But not only is it a club of substance they know just how to play friendly Sunday cricket. Cue their captain Brett popping his head round our dressing room door to negotiate the order of the day. “Would you like to bat or bowl?” “I think we will have a bowl thanks” responds Erratics skipper Mark Hailwood (gasps from some of his teammates – does he know how hot it is?). “Fine, shall we go for 35 or 40 overs” asks Brett. “We would prefer 40” says Mark (he really doesn’t know how hot it is). Finally “shall we have retirements at 30?” Mark asserts that we are happy to play without retirements to which Brett ominously retorts “Well, ok but we will make sure our overseas Aussie retires at 50”. Brett also knows how hot it is and promises drinks whenever we ask for them.

Anuj and Oscar open the attack. We are pleased Oscar has made it as his parents were full of tales from a coastal drive from hell through a low visibility misty sea fret. And soon he is taking a wicket after a smart catch by the skipper. Anuj, meanwhile, was involved in a warm up prelude to this winter’s Australia v India Test series. First he snaffles the skipper and Aussie, Brett, and then much to everyone’s surprise, especially given the pre match talk of retirement at 50, he draws a false shot from Sam Rose, the Ottery overseas player from Adelaide and Matthew Hewson takes an excellent catch. Out for a duck!

As the temperature kept rising we started to lose our early control and the Gleesons (father and son) each scored 50 and then retired (so now we knew the day’s etiquette didn’t just apply to overseas players). There were some blood curdling appeals by our keeper Jon Perkin; well I thought they were appeals until I realised he was trying to silence (at a very long distance) his barking dog, Poppy. Poppy won the battle as far as I could tell.

There were murmurings among the Ottery crowd about why Hailwood hadn’t bowled. Was he injured? Was he trying to avoid the mid innings carnage? But they were definitely confused as news had travelled from Ashburton that he was THE Erratics’ threat. After two drinks breaks and with the overs running down Mark finally brought himself on. Two wickets in his first over. So simple really!

Anuj had the last say in his Australia v India duel. Sam Rose’s Dad, Matty (who had only arrived in the country the day before) outscored his son before being bowled by Anuj with the penultimate ball of the innings. 3-0 to Anuj. Ottery waived the last ball and we went in for tea with the home side closing on a formidable 223-8 declared.

There was a great spread for tea (thank you Ottery!) and a great spread of conversation. It was good to see Krups who popped in with his family including latest addition to the Erratics tribe, young Olivia. Some became agitated by a large flock of crows – otherwise known as a murder of crows- on the square. Was this a sign of things to come? Meanwhile Dr Hugh regaled those nearest to him about a teenage holiday encounter with prostitutes. There was probably a very innocent explanation but I was asked to umpire so never heard it.

Duncan and Jon opened the innings and after just a few runs a scoring shot by Duncan led to wild applause from the Erratics back in the pavilion. The Ottery keeper was a bit miffed and wondered aloud about the sportsmanship of clapping a run scored off a 13 year old bowler. When informed that it was Duncan’s 8000th run for the club the keeper sighed ‘Ah, context is everything’. Probably true too of Dr Hugh’s vacation tale over tea.

Duncan went on to make a fine 55 and retired to have a cold shower which only partly staved off heat stroke. Dhruba dug in for a superb 39 and Anuj (what a day he had!) a rather more belligerent 50 (retired). The winning line was nearly there but this is the Erratics after all. We so nearly completely mucked it up – including three (yes, three) run outs when we still had enough overs to spare. The tension rose and Duncan and Anuj had to pad up again. Duncan was needed but only as a non facing batter as Matthew Hewson smashed the ball to the boundary with just one ball to spare to win us the match.

A wonderful day of cricket with 450 runs scored. Both sides used 8 bowlers and everyone had a bat. Well done skippers Brett and Mark for understanding what friendly cricket is all about.
