Met Office v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Tue 13 May 2025 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 8 Wickets

Match report Reporting by Matt Crawford

A trip to one our closer away days on Tuesday saw us play a Met Office side where Anuj was to skipper a strong Erratics side, though the Erratics sides these days are almost strong, and this was no exception. Anuj may or may not have won the toss, he has stated on the record that he likes to chase, and the Erratics started in the field, so he may as well have won it.

Mark began metronomically as usual, Tim slightly wayward, but each claimed an early wicket to energize the team. Brad fulfilled the Nick Walding / Harry Everett noisy role, backing the bowlers and enthusing the field.

Anuj and Fraser chipped in with wickets, and George attempted valiantly to extract some spin from what is usually a benign wicket, and the Met Office managed to hoist themselves up to a lofty 151.

Tim's variations snaffled a second wicket late on, but he did finish on the expensive side, enough at least to garner a statistical factoid from Fraser but we shan't dwell on that.

The post-game survey revealed that all players were in agreement that the match's highlight was Anuj climbing on the roof of the clubhouse, entirely unnecessarily, to fish the ball out of the gutter, after Jack Bartlett bashed a six up there on his way to the first of his side's 2 retirements. Anuj almost remained stuck up there, when his trousers got caught on said gutter during the dismount, and almost had to dictate the rest of the game's instructions from the roof.

Jon Perkin and Richard Lindsay had a fight of politeness to determine who would face the first ball, and before you knew it Richard had retired. Not for the first time this year, a swashbuckling and fearless knock, a six into the tennis hedge, clips to the car park and square pulls for 4. My reckoning by reflecting on scorecards to date, is that Rick retired on 33* on the night but also exactly 100 not out for the season so far. Congratulations to him.

At the other end JP seemed almost pedestrian in comparison but still managed almost a run a ball 18, managing a couple of fours of his own, and also took out Mark Hailwood, the standing umpire, with a straight one that pinged off Mark's arm, though Team Umpire shortly got their own back and JP was adjudged LBW.

Brad and Matt continued with a mini partnership of 30 or so, Brad shocked us all with his first dismissal whilst representing the pink unicorn. Meanwhile on the sidelines Fraser gave George a quick how-to of scoring, and also a how-not-to-score, by ripping a page out of the book. Thank goodness it wasn't one of us!

Matt retired, leaving the Erratics needing something like 40 from 7 overs, Mark Phillips kindly stepped aside to let skipper Anuj into the action.
Dhruba and Anuj rotated the strike with composure as the overs clicked down, the run rate never quite ticking into the worrying category, Anuj hit 6 of the best in the penultimate over although did get dropped a number of times, before the pair brought us home with 3 balls to spare.

We retired to the Beer Engine for some excellent chickpea curry and hot dogs, Fraser cuddled up under a blanket with George, and in a week where Virat and Rohit both hung up their Test whites, Anuj and Dhruba showed us Indian cricket is in good village hands, and hopefully will bring us many more victories to come (Spoiler alert, they replicated this just 9 days later against Lympstone).
