Match report DR. MANSOOR AHMAD IS LIVE.

Matt Hewson reports...

The characters in Akira Kurosawa’s celebrated RASHOMON tell us about the same grisly incident – a murder, no less – over and over again.
On some things they accord, but on others, they sharply disagree. The truth can be a murky business.
The camera may not lie, but it is not guaranteed to be honest, either.

The match against Devon Medics is confusing and at times surreal. I am left with many questions. Why are there so many different umpires.
Why are they all padded up. Why do none of the umpires know the match rules that they asked for. And why can none of them agree on wides.

Modern professional sport tries to supplant RASHOMON phenomena through video technology. Amateur sport has mostly been spared,
but not universally. A little way through the first innings (Erratics in the field) a tripod appears on the boundary, somewhere behind the bowler’s arm.

The camera: modernity’s great miracle. Could early viewers of the television always distinguish between the image and the reality?
Did they ever reach out across the room to touch the things it portrayed, their hands denied by the warm, hard, glass?
After the match, I ask who recorded the game and whether I can see the video. I hope that watching it will help me answer my many questions.

The livestream is entrancing. Like the best home videos the broadcast starts with the lens obscured. A hand, or maybe an arm. There is some
laughter and good humour – from Dr. Ahmad, we assume, as the camera jolts and shudders, straining into focus. Recognisable figures – that is to say,
recognisably figures, and figures that we recognise. Mark Hailwood running in. Anuj gliding across the square, the field shifting around him.

The footage takes on a dreamlike quality. The camera is moved, and the wicket becomes obscured by the frame of the phone holder.
It is like we are watching from the bottom of a tin can, or the inside of a gun barrel – as though at any moment James Bond might drift
into the scene and shoot us.

I am watching a Devon Medic nick off to Alex Perkin; Lee and Rick battle against the bowlers.

I hear the sound of birdsong, and the noise of my son stirring in the next room. I realise I have been watching Jonathan Kirby’s dismissal
at 0.25x speed on a loop for seven hours. I still cannot tell whether it is a bump ball. The expression of the bowler – incredulous, outraged –
is etched into my mind as Jonathan doesn’t walk but awaits Umpire Lee’s decision. The hyper-slow audio creaks and groans like tectonic plates.

If Jonathan Kirby bumps a ball and nobody sees it, is he still out?

Over the coming weeks and months I gradually begin to appreciate how deeply the footage has seeped into my consciousness.
In quiet moments I hear the kind, soothing voice of the commentator. Dropping a teabag into the bin, my mind replays “that is a lovely shot’.

I watch the video again and again, but instead of my questions being answered, they multiply. If the umpires were padded up because
they were next in, why didn’t they take their bats. How did Lee arrange for a Red Arrows fly-by at the end of his over.
Why is one of the fielders dressed entirely in grey.

A swift darts across the outfield, with summer not far behind it.
