Match report

A wrong turn after being distracted by chat about Erratics’ captaincy meant that Lee G & I went for a detour to Ashburton on our way to Stokeinteignhead for our Friday evening fixture against Baker’s CC. Perhaps it was a some sort of plan to imitate Southampton’s spygate scandal ahead of our scheduled visit in July. Meanwhile, JC took a wrong turning into Baker’s changing room, only to discover that they had 13 players(!)…... Would any of them rise to the occasion?
Grant won the toss (of a tobacco tin) and elected to bat first on a chilly Friday evening. Stoke’s pitch was in good condition (once the dusting of rabbit poo had been swept aside) having benefited from its hilltop location and roll-on covers to protect it from the previous day’s downpours.
Fraser and Nigel opened the batting on their 100th Erratics’ appearance together. Bakers, uncharacteristically, didn’t bowl many pies and kept the opening partnership’s scoring rate steady. Nigel described how the middle of his bat is quite solid, but the edges are rather soft and cracked (perhaps it’s been overcooked) but when he did find the middle, the quick outfield rewarded shots that beat the infield as they raced to the boundary. Fraser succumbed to an unfortunate lbw, and Matt H was bowled by a quick one that you’d rather not face early on. I continued my approach of hitting through fielders, and benefiting from the chances that were offered to Bakers not sticking (butter fingers?). At the other end, Brad Causey continued his emphatic contributions for the Erratics this season, as he remains with an infinite average.
Bakers kneaded just under a run-a-ball to beat us. Bowling at the stumps proved the best approach for taking wickets, as Roger, Nigel and Fraser took a batch of top order wickets with a mix of lbw and bowled dismissals – supported by Brad throwing at the stumps to take his second direct-hit run-out in two matches – leaving Bakers with a soggy bottom as they folded to 15-6. Bakers’ Sam Gedye was the only resistance to the Erratics’ whipping, rising the total to 44 before retiring. Matt H came up with the perfect reply to being hit for a couple of boundaries by taking his first wicket of the season. Will Luscombe – bowling while wearing shades – cooly took his first and second wickets for the Erratics, the first catch gobbled up by Lee at square-leg before the number 11 looped one back to Will: Straight in the breadbasket! Gedye returned to the crease and battered boundaries while protecting their number 10 to reach the total with almost two overs to spare. Well…. we managed to beat 10 of them!
