Ide v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 05 Jun 2026 at 6.00pm
Match was Tied

Match report I’ve been impressed by the detail in the match reports. How do the authors manage to remember apparent ball by ball detail while fielding and unable to make notes? I can scarcely recall who bowled the last over.

One of the pleasures of being a newcomer to cricket is to discover so many amazing village grounds. The Ide ground (I now know for sure it’s “eeeed” not “eyed”) is not idyllically next to the pub on the village green or have long sweeping vistas over Devon countryside, but it is nonetheless a hidden gem tucked away behind hedges some way out of the village amongst fields and woods. The pitch is on gently sloping ground falling away sharply at the north end. In an attempt to disorientate the opposition they have recently moved the pitch but not the pavilion which is now in the adjacent field and overlooks an impressive hay meadow. The wicket is a new Astro strip running north south and aligned with more steeply falling ground at the north end.

When I arrived a gaggle of Erratics had gathered on the wicket under a dull overcast sky and cool blustery wind. The old hands were orientating themselves to the new ground and it was agreed that the shiny new kit and machinery (even an electronic scoreboard) has no bearing on the competence of the opposition.

Captain George won the toss and chose to put Ide in to bat. Mark H and Lee opened the bowling to Ide’s batsmen Alex and Jonah operating a master and apprentice role. The master called the runs for both, making his decisions clear and very loud... “NOOOO”, perhaps this is why the pitch is well away from the village. Mark plugged away and did a sterling job at limiting the batsmen who were getting their eye in and proving worryingly capable, keeping the ball high and off the long and slow outfield. Roger took over from Lee but despite tight bowling 4s and 6s were beginning and runs began to accumulate at an uncomfortable rate. The master retired and was replace by their No.3 who clocked up three 4s and two 6s in 15 balls. Roger had the worst of it toiling away up and down the slope at fine leg during his non-bowling overs and suffering during his bowling overs. He thought he had an LBW but the Ide umpire disagreed; suffice to say the umpire needed some feathers smoothing down.

George took over bowling from Mark and Ide’s No.3 retired. Either George or Roger (sorry can’t remember which and the score sheet conflicts) put up a catch from the Apprentice. Between the first three batsmen they had put on 88 runs off 10 overs. George in what seemed like a foolhardy decision put me on to bowl. But he surely must have consulted his crystal ball – and the quality of batting dipped. Fortune smiled and beginning with a sharp stumping by JK four wickets fell and by over 18 the run rate had fallen giving a total of 119. Unfortunately, the last two overs were costly with their No.9 (Rick) scoring a further 23 resulting in a total of 144. For the last ball of the innings Rick got himself in a tangle and the ball somehow found its way through to the stumps bringing up my first, and last ever, 5-fer, Yeh! You can put the crystal ball away now George, we all know the chance of that ever happening again are less than Haiti winning the World Cup (2,500:1 last time I looked).

A mention must go to Matt for tireless patrolling of the western boundary and Roger toiling up and down the hill at fine leg. Both saving costly boundaries.

At change over a straw poll of phone forecasts predicted an 80% chance of rain, which felt about right. Fraser and Peter opened. Fraser got a 4 off his first touch but Ide set a deep field and the outfield was slow making boundaries difficult. The run rate was slow, amounting to 26 off the first 5 overs. Peter hit nice deflections to notch up some useful singles before being bowled. Matt came in and showed good intent from the start, this seemed to unleash Fraser’s coiled spring and it didn’t seem long before they were both retiring with a healthier looking scoreboard.

JK came in with Hugh and as JK explained: “I took a justifiable and calculated risk to maintain my seasonal top ranking for run outs”. His gamble paid off and he does indeed keep the top ranking. At this stage (79 off 12 overs) the hill looked like it might be too much to climb but Lee came in and hit a tasty 4 off his first ball followed by a second and third. A faster fuller 5th ball gave him a bit of a fright. He succumbed to LBW at 23, but he’d got us up to 117 from 17 overs. We needed 9 an over. Roger had taken over from Hugh and was scoring well, a 6 and then dropped despite a heroic effort by the Ide fielder at Long On. George had come in to replace Lee, 19 needed of 2 overs. A couple of singles then a top edge for 4 from George set up the final over with 11 needed. Rain threatened but the game would be finished. It was a tight 2 off the first ball, then great running to get 3 byes off the second. A cracking delivery meant no score on the third ball. A 4 from Roger for the fourth leaves us needing two off the last ball to win the game. It’s a single – the game is drawn!

It was gloomy and raining by the time we were packing up and heading for the pub but as someone commented “Cricket’s the winner!”.
