Ashburton v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 01 Jul 2026 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost By 5 Wickets
Match report
Democratic Republic of Congo 1 England 2
Democratic Republic of Ashburton Won Erratics 0
Two momentous games played at the same time some 4,145 miles apart. Both full of drama and last minute excitement.
To the great credit of both cricket teams there were 11 players aside willing to forego at least some of the action in Atlanta. The first half could be watched in the Ashburton pavilion but the toss would decide who could see the second. Good lad Fraser. He won the toss and the Erratics got to bat and some lower order batters to sneak away to the TV. The shouts when Harry Kane scored each of his goals brought some Ashburton fielders over to check what was happening. An unofficial hydration break I suppose.
The Erratics matched England with their slow start and were 38-5 after ten overs with only Kyle Wedgwood reaching double figures with a nice cameo. The middle order proved more robust with Fraser Chave and Lee Grant both retiring on 30 to get the score into three figures. Lee hit two giant sixes one of which ended up deflecting off the pavilion onto Mark Phillips as other Erratics took evasive action. You took one for the team, Mark!
As the Erratics ninth wicket fell an interesting development took place. Although the Erratics had 11-Ben Youngman making his season’s debut decided he really ought not to bat or bowl due to a trapped nerve in his neck. Ashburton kindly allowed us to send out one of our earlier failures to have another go. Duncan Chave, out for a duck first time round, scored an important 13 not out to edge the Erratics to a respectable total of 121 off our 20 overs. The four Duncan hit of the final ball nearly decapitated your correspondent but more importantly took Chave Senior into an elite group who have scored 9000 runs for the Erratics. He joins Chris Cook, Matt Cook, Chris Ferro and Richard Hitchcock in passing this milestone. We salute you Duncan.
Full credit goes to young George Colwill who removed the Erratics top 4 in a deadly spell of 4-5 off his four overs. There have been Erratics in the past, I believe, who salivate at the thought of 4 in 5.
Ashburton are a decent side with at least three of their side playing for Devon Senior teams (one for the O50s, one for the O60s and one for the O70s). So we knew it would be tough. And it was to start with. After 10 overs they had raced away to 85 -2. Their total was boosted by the award of 5 penalty runs for the ball hitting the discarded helmet of Mark Phillips our wicket keeper. Have we ever conceded penalty runs before?
Chacko bowled with pace and Raj with guile and both were rewarded with a wicket. But it was a miserly spell by skipper Fraser Chave that put the brake on the Ashburton onslaught. His four overs conceded just 9 runs plus a wicket. Mark Hailwood also bowled a very tight second spell to help slow things down.
The home side were impeded too by some superb fielding by Kyle that resulted in two run outs. The second being the subject of much discussion as the umpire couldn’t quite believe the wicket had been broken fairly. But it had; it was just rather unusual!
Suddenly from absolutely romping home Ashburton needed 18 off the last three overs and still 7 off the last. It was tense. The home skipper AJ West held his nerve and hit two fours off balls three and four. Ashburton had won with two balls to spare. Another close game at Ashburton on a ground looking resplendent in the evening sunshine with Devon hills all around. A lovely evening all round, even in Atlanta!
