Erratics Cricket Club Won

Match report ‘They’re more a batting side’

Coming down the roads into Branscombe, you can look down and view where the wicket is, such is the closeness of the pitch and it is certainly our smallest, quirkiest ground to play at all year. These sort of grounds, along with Broadclyst, Ide of old, are always much preferred to the grounds where it’s just a vast field and very little character behind them, even if the hosts insist on everyone bowling 2 overs.

Erratics fielded first, and we opened the bowling with JK and Brad. It definitely seemed to be a game for the openers who could retire the quickest, with each of them comparing how many balls they took once they retired. It took the Erratics until the 14th over to pick up their first wicket then 7 fell in the following 5 overs. Mark Hailwood showing everyone else how to do it (by getting the batter to step back and smash his own stumps) and then 2 stumpings. But Kyle ‘The Don’ Wedgewood showed us the way entirely with 3 wickets for just 9 runs from their 2 overs, but Branscombe posting 181 meant it would require a T20 record chase for Erratics.

Having had a rather turgid innings previously at Broadclyst, Branscombe felt the perfect place for me to get back into the swing and opening with Brad should see us off to a good start. So when Brad knocked it straight back to the bowling for a duck, Rick came in and retired at the 25* with the score on 37, so safe to say I’d not quite got my eye in. A few swipes and clothed balls to the boundary, I mercifully got 25 and joined Rick. Duncan quickly joined us (27* from 9) then Fraser (25* from 11) and Matt too (28* from 12) and when Kyle was dismissed, erratics found themselves on 151/3 from 14 overs. JK and Mr President kept us ticking over, and when Martin was runout, it brought Rick back in. Mark then skied one bringing me back to the crease and we took it home, with 8 balls to still to spare.

Some food, some food was enjoyed after the game, with several Branscombe players saying that was the best chase they’ve seen. We all headed back, dreaming of our next fixture at Devon Medics (soon to have been cancelled) with a spring in our step.
