Lustleigh v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 02 Aug 2026 at 1.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 97 Runs

Match report Reporting by Nigel Rutherford

The usually verdant Lustleigh now resembling the Serengeti provided the venue for the match on the 2nd of August. Lots of friends and families arriving along with their Erratic counterparts gave the game a kind of festival atmosphere whilst the dome of heat under which everyone melted added to a sense of placidity. Losing the toss meant that the Erratics had to suffer the brunt of conditions. It was great to see Oscar back, charging in, bowling in tandem with Lee and it was a good opening spell without much luck. In fact luck was in short supply as Lustleigh piled on the runs. Very little seemed to go to hand either in the air or ground as balls were being retrieved from the woods or stream with increasing regularity. There were periods when it felt like the remaining overs were going up rather than decreasing. Chatter in the field was as to whether we could defend 180 then 200 then 250 and finally as the last over was completed and Lustleigh had chalked up 280 there was a quiet realisation that it might be just beyond reach.

The break provided some respite from the meteorological and batting onslaught as well as a chance to indulge in plenty of fine cricketing fare. An explanation of Ben YB's absence from the day gave us all some insight into the dangers of an insouciant approach to body alignment whilst applying peanut butter to a piece of toast. As a leisurely tea wound down, opening batters Jon and Richard were given clear instructions to each score a hundred with the hope that the rest of us could mop up the remaining runs. For about 20 overs they made a really good fist of it, both passing 50 and included Jon's "Mother of all sixes" which clattered off the upper branches of the tallest tree in the ground. For some time the Erratics were still very much in the game but with the demise of the openers there followed a steady fall of wickets and ultimately a 'small' gulf of about a 100 runs separated the teams. A really enjoyable game played in great spirits, washed down with a cold bottle of beer outside the pavilion.
