Newton Poppleford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 26 May 2013 at 1pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 87 runs

Match report Prakash Kripakaran reports...

We had a beautiful sunny day for this match, probably the first this season. All the erratics were in a good mood except for Gareth who apparently was having the worst day of his life having forgotten his cricket kit and at the prospect of having to play in jeans.

Our captain for the day - Martin Wright, won the toss and opted to bat. His talk was of a strong batting lineup and the potential to set an imposing target of around 230, which looking back was rather too optimistic. Lucky and Martin opened the innings and faced an excellent opening spell from NP's bowlers. Their young fast bowler - House, was generating good bounce and posing a lot of questions. However, they were bowling to a formidable combination of opening batsmen! While Martin was happy to stay and rotate strike, Lucky started to look for the boundaries right from the start. He punished a few errant deliveries, not afraid to take the aerial route when needed. After putting together a good partnership of 50 runs, Martin was out to a nice catch by House. Jonathan, who went in next, had no intention of playing defensive shots. He hit a couple of his trademark pulls and cuts and was soon out caught at mid-wicket. It was then up to Chris and Lucky to build a score. Lucky soon reached his fifty. He hit shots all around the park from nifty flicks to powerful uppish drives down the ground. After taking the erratics past 100, Lucky was out bowled by Thomas. And suddenly, the pitch appeared to have changed. The bounce was uneven and the middle-order batsmen, unable to cope with the bounce, were out in quick session for single-digit scores caught behind the wicket at slip or to the keeper. Chris battled on, however, to take the erratics to a score of 154, far less than what the captain had in mind when winning the toss!

After an excellent tea, Gareth and Suhaib opened the bowling attack. While the Erratics had a strong bowling attack on the day, they could have never imagined what transpired. Gareth, who had by then found a serviceable combination of cricket gear courtesy of the generosity of fellow Erratics, was in fine form. NP batsmen were finding it difficult to play his inswingers. His first three overs were wicket-maidens. He trapped the opener lbw and the next two were out bowled. He picked up a wicket in his fifth over as well. Suhaib's pace and line were also making the batsmen uncomfortable. He got his reward as NP's Lee playing across the line was out to a diving catch from Russ at covers. At the end of their opening spell, Gareth and Suhaib had done significant damage and left NP reeling at 11 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. The middle-order batsmen for NP then began to get their eye in and play their shots. Coombs, Hunter and House all looked threatening. However, none of their batsmen could really get going on the day as every bowler that Martin brought on bowled well and picked up a wicket. The last wicket fell to Varun as he rattled the stumps with a fullish delivery. NP were all out for a total of 67.

After a nice day of cricket, the Erratics enjoyed NP's fine hospitality at the pub. In honour of Lucky's first 50 for the Erratics, Chris presented him with a memento - a piece of his bat that he broke during his wonderful innings!
