Chumleigh v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sat 06 Sep 2014 at 2.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 9 wickets
Match report
The Erratics’ made their second visit to Chulmleigh this season looking to go one better than the draw in May, get over the post-tour blues and get back to winning ways, buoyed on by Jeff recalling his best figures (4-30?) being achieved on this ground. I also wanted to be able to have my first report to contain the details of a glorious Erratics victory, something which would also be a first for me! The setting, as expertly described by Martin in the report of the season’s earlier game, was fantastic. With dramatic views over fields and woods to the South-East with late summer sunshine to remind us that autumn has not yet arrived.
Martin, captain for today, won the toss for the Erratics and elected to bat, in what was agreed to be a timed match with 20 overs to be bowled after 6pm. The opening pair of Jan and Krupakar looked solid, seeing off the first half dozen overs without incident, the opening bowling pair being youthful seam bowlers with slightly more pace from one end and more accuracy from the other. However, the resolve was broken with wickets from consecutive balls from Spence; Krupakar being trapped in front of a straight ball and Martin Wright edging behind reducing the Erratics to 16-2.
The middle order managed to prevent the innings collapsing, though accurate bowling, a lively pitch both in terms of movement through the air and variable bounce, and impressively athletic fielding, meant that scoring opportunities were not easy to find.
Being restricted to in the region of 115-5 as tea approached, noticing the slower run rate that the Erratics were scoring, Martin announced that we would declare after an additional 15 minutes play, which we hoped would give us the opportunity to score some quick runs and to post a competitive score.
Unfortunately soon after, the team’s highest scorer, 41 from Chris Ferro, was dismissed playing on from Chulmleigh’s fastest bowler Keighley. Nevertheless, runs from Fraser Chave (22 not out) and an aggressive 21 from Greg MacQueen including a couple of big straight sixes, left the Erratics with a stronger looking 153-7 compared with a matter of overs previous, giving the bowlers something to try to defend.
Varun opened the bowling for the Erratics and had the opening batsmen defending, scoring just 12 runs from Varun’s opening 4-over spell. However with the Erratics needing to bowl out Chulmleigh for victory, we were unable to take the crucial wickets needed.
Chulmleigh batted well, though in the field we felt we lacked a slice of luck with half-chances finding the gaps between fielders, most memorably when Fraser was moved from saving singles at square leg to the boundary only for the next ball to fall exactly to where he had just been, I for one am not convinced it was down to clever batting!
A ball was hit low and hard in the air at me while fielding at mid-off, though I was unable to take the catch, instinctively throwing my hands down to catch around my ankles (a long way down for me!) I attempted to catch with my wrist, which I can assure you is not advisable. Otherwise, catching opportunities were scarce.
All in all, the batsmen did not give a lot away with Greg MacQueen eventually breaking the opening partnership on 78 with a flighted ball deceiving the batsman to trap him LBW. The seemingly inevitable defeat was unable to be prevented though, with Chulmleigh making the most of scoring chances and reaching the target with 6.3 overs remaining and 9 wickets in hand, the unbeaten batmen finishing on 55 and 46 not out.
On the whole it appeared that we came up against a side on the wrong day, with the opposition admitting that they had probably delivered their best display of the season, despite some bright moments from the visitors, they were able to edge the performances of the Erratics side in all departments.
