Harberton v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 20 Sep 2015 at 1.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket

Match report Nigel Rutherford reports:

The fog, which put a premature end to our last game here and had the players leaving the field in a scene reminiscent of an early hammer horror film, had finally dissipated, allowing C. Ferro and F.Chave to get the Erratics innings underway.

After a steady opening partnership, the fall of Fraser's wicket brought P. Mollins to the crease. A couple of shots into his innings he had both runs and a pulled muscle to his name. Clearly in some pain he became focused on thumping each ball as hard as possible which he did with considerable success.

D.Thistlethwaite joined Paul out in the middle at this point to act as his runner. There was a moment of concern when Dan, having completed a quick single, appeared to wince in pain whilst rubbing his own thigh and the skipper considered sending another Erratic out to run for Dan. Fortunately no lasting damage had been done and the two of them saw it out to the end of Paul's innings in which a feisty 16 runs had been scored.

When Ferro's innings came to an end from a delivery described by the fielding side as "ball of the season", a further three wickets fell in quick succession.

A partnership between Rutherford and Crawford steadied things up before Hailwood joined Rutherford at the crease. Mark, it should be noted had only just arrived at the ground, having spent the morning drifting around the upper reaches of the Earth's atmosphere in a hot air balloon. Now back on the ground and with oxygen levels back to normal, he was seeing the ball big, resulting in some crunching shots including a backfoot pull shot over deep mid wicket; the second best shot of the day! At the end of 40 overs the Erratics had arrived at a competitive 145.

Rutherford and Ferro opened the bowling for the Erratics and produced a tidy 12 over spell, the latter in particular, jagging the ball around, picking up one caught behind but could easily have had several more.

In spite of some excellent spin bowling from Bernie and Fraser and a typically frugal spell from the skipper, Chris Cook, Harberton always managed to stay fractionally ahead of the run rate. With only 4 runs needed and a couple of wickets and overs in hand, a full length delivery from Chris was sent sailing back over his head into the hedgerow; shot of the day and with it the culmination of another close game in a Harberton victory.
