Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 35 runs
Match report
by Martin Weiler
An odd one this. Here we were as the away team on a ground - the University fields at Topsham - that could have been our regular home pitch. This latest experience did little to change the prevailing view that the overwhelmingly intrusive noise from the M5 far outweighs the excellent facilities.
The match formed part of a near back to back series against unusually named opponents - Sunsets, Mystics, Barbarians and Philanthropists. Very Erratic! The Barbarians, tonight's hosts, are an occasional side based at the University Sports Centre. So this was an all University clash to set alongside traditional fixtures against the Nomads and the Students. Indeed it fitted in with early Erratic fixtures which were often against departmental sides.
There was a last minute change of Erratic plans when Matt Cook turned up with a fractured hand - the result of an argument between his bike and a kerbstone the night before. Father, Chris, stepped in to skipper the side.
The game was of the 20 overs, 2 overs each; retire at 25 variety. It was the home side's first game of the season and still short of several players at the start they were invited to go first. They took full advantage. The batting was .well, Barbarian and the bowling, fielding and particularly catching Erratic.
The score raced to 87 off 10 and 120 from 14. At last a bit of squeeze was applied and the final score limited to 148. Bowling honours went to Chris Cook (2-4), Jonathan Davies (1-8), Jonathan Kirby 1-10) and Greg Richmond (1-11). Fielding highlight was a superb stop and throw by David Pearson to set up a Matt Turner run out. This just after David had shown that an Erratic could hold on to a catch.
In reply, The Erratics never really got going and despite double figure postings from Chris Cook (31), Guy Clarke (22), Phil Ellis (13) and Martin Weiler (11) could only manage 113. Towards the end Matt Cook let out some of his frustration shouting "come on, run!". His father sagely replied "we need more than singles now".
It was not to be Matt's final frustration. He was forced to walk to the pub in Topsham after Chris drove off without him thinking he had already left. Not a great 24 hours for Matt!!
