Sunsets v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 05 Aug 2005 at 6pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Match Report by: David Pearson

After a long, one-sided reunion between Geoff Fox (one of the so called “immortals”) and Richard Hitchcock the Erratics arrived in force to be greeted by a deceptively cheerful opposition. Nick Birbeck (selector) had devised a cunning plan which allowed no fewer than Erratics 13 to enjoy the match. Among the 13, (in fact, among the original 10 - Editor), was debutant John Carroll, a welcome addition to the squad...

Captain Kirby (J) walked into the middle of the field with the opposition captain (Hitchcock) while other Erratics creaked around in the nets. The Erratics moved out into the field after having lost the toss and Ian Lisk opened the bowling with Phil Power.

To everyone's surprise the breakthrough was made in the second over with their opening batsman hoiking the ball high in the air to Gabrielle “she was substituted too early” Kirby at deep mid-on. No one dared breathe as the ball circled and whirled in the air, plummeting towards her outstretched hands. It did, however stick, somewhere between her elbows and the batsman was forced to walk off the field with the score at 2 for 1; this was the start of the Sunsets' collapse.

Power and Lisk took two wickets each conceding only fourteen runs between them before they were taken off after six overs and replaced by Orpen and Prosser (replacing Gabrielle Kirby in the field).
As Hitchcock walked onto the pitch I expected an extra paragraph in this report describing Hitchcockisms, but it was not to be. Richard was soon caught and bowled by Orpen.
At 19-9 the Sunsets were in deep trouble, but two fours and two sixes ( 14 off Fox's bowling), from the last partnership provided some hope for them. They finished on 41 all out. Prosser (2-2)., Power (2-4). Orpen ( 3-7),. Lisk (2-7 ).were the main wicket takers.

Martin Weiler and a confident John Carroll opened the batting and put on 8 runs before a surprise full toss landed on top of Weiler's stumps. Weiler walked off the pitch with 2 runs to his name, muttering about unfair play, but no one listened because it was Edmund Thomas who strutted out past him onto the strip.

Ed played a magnificently sturdy innings, surviving for a full 10 overs without scoring a single run, an achievement even David Salter would be proud of. A lone fielder was placed on the square leg boundary and there was speculation as to whether news of Ed's six at Lustleigh had reached the ears of Hitchcock. When at last Ed's patience was rewarded with a single run, a roar came from the pavilion, startling some grazing sheep in the next county, many of the opposition thinking the Erratics had already surpassed their score.

But it was Carroll's innings which secured the match, a solid 33 before the umpire's finger went up for an LBW appeal. And it was up to Kirby J and Pearson J to acquire the remaining three runs.
It was over after just thirteen overs, despite pleas from Orpen to “prolong the match because the Pub isn't open yet”.
