It was one of those days.

With forty minutes to go in the advancing cold and gloom of the anonymous slab of east Devon hinterland that lies between Smallridge and Chardstock this was shaping up to be a distinctly underwhelming conclusion to the 2005 Erratics season. Forty minutes later all those present were aware that they had witnessed something very special indeed.

I'm writing this report without the aid of the scorebook and I didn’t take notes on the day, so it's bound to be a bit short on detail. However, everything that went before paled into insignificance in comparison with what happened in the last seven overs of the match, so that isn't really a problem.

We fielded first, but I've got no idea whether we won the toss or not. I suspect, however, that Phil Tolley won it and decided to take advantage of the decent light and weather - it was even quite warm for a while in the first couple of hours of the game - in the knowledge that conditions would become more difficult later on. Tolley himself opened and top-scored for the Saints with a score of just over 50, but we chipped away at the rest of the batting order and the wickets were shared among the likes of David Pearson, Brian Carpenter and Chris Cook. Apologies if I've missed out anyone who took a wicket - such as Andrew McRae, who bowled very tightly - but most of my memories of the opposition innings seem to have been erased by a combination of Al Brunt's energetic fielding and the subsequent brilliance of Cook the Elder.

Al had a taxing afternoon, stationed as he was for the most part on the deep square-leg boundary, but he did manage to take a well-judged catch off the bowling of yours truly and complete a few swift swoops of which the buzzard which circled the ground during the All Saints innings would have been proud. Unfortunately, one of these was disappointingly topped off with a throw - with batsmen confused and run-out beckoning - which also had more in common with the work of an elderly bird of prey than with that of the great Gary Pratt, so it would have to be regarded as a mixed afternoon for our resident Birmingham City and Warwickshire supporter. Al, however, remained cheerful throughout, for which he deserves great credit.

They closed on 187 for about 6 off 40 overs, a total which most Erratics fancied us to get. However, as most of us know, fancying something and actually getting it are two different things, and when Richard Hitchcock fell early in our reply it was clear that it was going to be a tough afternoon.
