Match report Match Report by : Chris Squire

More grounds should be like the Coaver Club. Set in the grounds of the imposing grade 2 listed County Hall and surrounded by ancient oaks, served by a bar boasting 4 well-kept ales. And a 5-minute walk from my house. The game was a 20-over evening skirmish on the artificial wicket, my quip to Chris Ferro that this meant I only had to do half a match report thus being remarkably prescient of this finished article. In actual fact, the Erratics batting display meant we only had to play three-quarters of the allotted overs, thereby ably assisting my prophesy.
There was a dawning realization through this game that the Sunsets were not the team that they once were. There was some reminiscing about players at the end of their earthly careers, whereas the team we were playing still appeared to be climbing the temporal career ladder. Or maybe some of us are just getting older. The game started with a potentially fearsome match-up, with the Erratics’ opening bowler and captain, Chris Ferro, pitched against the Sunsets’ opener. Ferro took himself off after the first over. His adversary took himself off after 3 overs, having hit 30 and thus retiring. Chris returned later, opening his second over and spell with a well-placed beamer. Some might say that the ball slipped, whilst I prefer to think that he took objection to and thus aim at the sight of the Conservative head of the council, John Harte, who had just emerged from the council chambers.
The Erratics’ bowlers did their best against a procession of big hitting Sunsets and perhaps some of the shots enabled fielders to get a close up view of the ancient oaks. Phil Ellis’ first over went for 25, Boopesh had 38 scored off his 4 overs. Penny Price was the pick of the bowlers - 2 for 25 - with one of the wickets a well-laid trap as Chris Ferro positioned himself at long-off (“He tends to hit them high and straight”). The batsman fell for it and was bowled.
Fielding made for Friday night comedy and the ground resembled a giant slip cradle, which some of us made look even more difficult. The Sunsets put on 175 for their allotted overs.
Erratics’ batting was opened by Martin Wright and Chris Fear. Chris was playing only his second game since leaving school and is now the latest in a long line of Erratics’ Chris-s. At least he hasn’t suffered the ignominy of an earlier in-coming Chris being sold 2 Erratics’ books by the late Stephen Fisher, only to be told by his partner that we already have them.
Fear was out for 4, to a good backwards-running catch. In fact, the Sunsets made the slip-cradle-like field appear as comfortable as a baby’s cradle; their fielding was really rather good. Or perhaps we were hitting things in the air. Wright spooned to mid-off for 15, with the next highest score 13 (Malhotra – clean bowled), Ellis – 12, and Ferro 11. Squire was out trying to hit over square, only for a giant to leap backwards and catch the effort. I later found out that the fielder’s nickname was “Viking”, so I convinced my daughters that they should torch his car in a bizarre re-enactment of Up Helly Aa. Ah, friendly cricket…
So, the Erratics were all out for 88. This was the 4th game of 5 within 7 days, which is a super reason for losing so heavily. Except we won the 5th.
