Match report So much rain had fallen that no groundsman in his right mind would have allowed this match to begin. Fortunately for us, Cheriton Fitzpaine's groundsman is Mike Foan. A new pitch was marked (the original being too muddy), Matt Cook won the toss and the Erratics took to the field in their new pink and blue club shirts. It is cruel that Mike - having gone to so much trouble to stage the match - was dismissed by its first ball. He slapped Gareth Oughton's half-volley to cover and, after a delay of several seconds in which he may have contemplated drawing stumps and declaring conditions unfit for play after all, walked dejectedly from the field in search of a comforting woodbine. Throughout the fifteen overs of the rain-shortened innings, we alternated between one good over, in which no boundary was struck, and one bad over, in which the boundary was reached two or more times (mostly by Ben Coe and Jeremy Tricks if memory serves). Matt held three catches and Fraser Chave took three wickets as Cheriton reached 108-7. In reply, Jonathan Kirby never quite got going but Cook and Chris Ferro both retired not out, Cook thematically reaching 35 with a six, Ferro thematically reaching 30 with a single. A few big hits in the last overs would have won the game, but our batting was suffocated by good Cheriton bowling and fielding, and we fell short by about a dozen runs.

This was my first taste of Cheriton's experimental mini-league, and I'm pleased to report that I found the match as enjoyable as any other that I have played there, which is to say 'very'. And in case Mike has read all the way down to here - he is an avid follower of our website - he should be proud of the excellent condition of his ground and the hospitality extended to us in the Half Moon after the match.
