It cannot be a novel observation that the quality of on-field intra-team banter may speak volumes about a side, conceivably even providing an index of the prevalent good, the occasional bad, and the never you-know-what of their cricketing character. The chatter emanating from this particular sample of Feniton C.C.’s membership roster was relaxed, confident and, tellingly, (your reporter observed) spiced with a piquant suggestion of hazard.
The unmistakeable easy exchange of village intimacies, somebody’s girlfriend, somebody’s kit, all hid a darkling aspect of our opponents collective psyche which Erratics, in their innocency, could have had no grounds whatever to suspect.

But twenty overs each, with an egalitarian rotation of overs per bowler, and Feniton’s unpleasant little secret, the source of their confident disregard of our sporting presence, was out.

They could all bowl.
Some of them, (at least 3 of them, by close observation from the locus umpireous), could bowl very well. Rapid and angled in on a full length. Nasty. Straight fast and accurate, again on a full length. Unnecessary. Controlled line and length with the only spin seen that day pulling the batsman around his crease. Good grief.

It had started innocuously enough. Just after the scheduled 6.00pm start, on a sunny evening which did its best with the view over the new-build housing lapping along the Western edge of the edge of the Acland Sports facility, Erratics commenced with a disciplined bowling assault, which was ultimately to limit the home side to a plausibly achievable target of 115 for 8, this achieved off 19.3 overs.
The bowling had been emotionally resilient when necessary, with Mark H and Matt C maintaining good length in the face of some muscular batting, and Lee Grant offering a change-up to test Krupakar’s undoubted efficiency behind the stumps. There was even fielding, with Siva and Martin W both making light of difficult catches in the deep, the latter’s effort voided on some technicality (“No Ball’ or somesuch taradiddle, your reporter remembers being mentioned).

And then they bowled.

Richard Lindsay top scored with 20, with Lee and Fraser sharing the only partnership of substance, a partnership which flattered Erratic ambition for a few overs before, in the face of relentless competence, hope crumbled and wickets fell like fixtures in May.

The Nog Inn is the perfect venue for a debrief, especially if time-travel is the sole identifiable fix.
There’s a portal in there somewhere, perhaps at the bottom of the ‘Black Rat’ ✤ barrel.
