Heads & Tails v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 26 Apr 2023 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 29 Runs
Match report
I asked our team statistician what the longest series of cancelled games at the start of a season was following our accumulation of five, seeking some validation for our misery. 33 was the answer, in 2020 which provided some perspective.
An artificial wicket was the cure to our rainy season start, though many beanie hats, and double jumpers were on show. An 18 overs a side match was agreed as the sky was already grey, and light threatening to fade early.
Lindsay and Ferro got us underway with the bat (toss lost), with a couple of stand-in Erratic fielders while the latecomers arrived. Looking for a positive start, Lindsay was caught after ballooning one up into the sky. The pitch was tricky, with only 15 coming from the first 5 overs, and after Sheridan fell shortly followed Nallala after a dubious LBW decision. With Crawford and Ferro at the crease a partnership began to grow, pinching singles with the odd boundary.
After both retired, Grant's onslaught could begin, punishing the bowling with 3 big sixes around the field, one managing to strike a car on its way past the ground. A fine innings saw Grant retire with 29 from just 13 balls. Tiwari tried to continue the acceleration in the final few overs but was caught with another struck into the night sky and unfortunately landing in the hands of one the Heads & Tails better fielders, their captain. Rutherford plundered some late runs to boost the Erratics total to a pleasing 115.
Tiwari opened the bowling, and perhaps too eager to get his own back on the fielder who caught him, was wayward but soon managed to control his aggression with a decent spell. Chave kept his overs tight with few chances for scoring, and when Rutherford and Fawcett came into the fray the opposition really started to struggle. Fawcett started with great line and trajectory for the artificial surface, as was rewarded on just his 3rd ball with the stumps being clattered, and a later one spooned to Sheridan at slip who held on for a good catch. Tiwari got his own back on the opposition captain who caught him by doing the same back from yet another hit up into the air, (somehow) muscling out keeper Krups and managing to cling on. Working in tandem this bowling pair collected 5 wickets which really swung the game in our favour.
Grant was even more miserly than usual, providing figures of 2-1-1-1, backed up by Lindsay and Haemmerli who took the honours for some great work in the field, cutting off boundaries and preventing some singles to restrict Heads and Tails.
The Erratics finally emerged victorious with a well-oiled, all-round performance disguising the lack of cricket suffered over the last couple of weeks. All enjoyed the ever-excellent grub at the Beer Engine, with one team member of over 300 games claiming it was the best he'd ever had! A positive start to the season.
