Ide v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 09 Jun 2023 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 7 Wickets

Match report Hearing the specially loud cheer at the end of the game from the watching Ide team as we left the field, I assumed that they were especially pleased with their win. We then discovered that in fact they had just heard of the resignation of Boris Johnson as an MP and that's what they were celebrating. Anyway, despite that misunderstanding about the cheer, it was certainly a good win for Ide.

Erratics batted first and got to the probably insufficient total of 97 with all the 20 overs used and 9 wickets down. Richard Lindsay and Jonathan Kirby us a really good start with their opening partnership. Fraser Chave has been having a run of excellent high scoring innings recently, but was unlucky this time when the second ball he faced kept really low and moved sharply across. After that wickets fell fairly regularly, but there were enough powerfully hit boundaries to keep the ground's ball finding dog, Oscar, reasonably well occupied. Hedge finds were no problem for him, but one in amongst the water weeds in the stream had him stumped for a while. Lee Grant and Martin Weiler made significant contributions to the total score. Noteworthy was Martin’s presidential 6 over the midwicket area of the stream. Yours truly at No. 11 followed Martin at the crease. The score then stood at 96 and so, of course, I was urged to make it 100. With only 4 balls remaining, that should have been possible. Nothing off the first, an attempted cover drive off the second resulted in only a single, a fielder being inconveniently in the way of the boundary I had hoped for. Valentin was left to face the final two balls and we finished with 97.

That did seem like not enough to be confident of a possible win and Ide’s brisk start to their innings certainly confirmed that thought. An early wicket, Fraser getting one of the openers with a direct hit run out, and then another wicket soon after gave us some encouragement. But, after that, Ide were unstoppable, cruising to their needed total with the loss of only three wickets and using less than 17 overs. But, as in previous matches, they compensated us with a generous spread of hot food.

Fraser told me before the match that this would be my 200th game for Erratics, a fact that I would not have otherwise known. A pity that 200th wasn’t a winning match! I wonder, out of those 200, how many were won, how many lost, how many drawn and how many tied? (I think I remember being in 2 ties.) That’s an irresistible challenge for Fraser. When he reads that, he’ll probably have the answer in 5 seconds flat with one of his Gizmos!
