Erratics Cricket Club Erratics v Sunsets on Fri 12 Jul 2024 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 7 Wickets
Match report
There are some real Erratics stars this season. I’m not thinking of the playing aspect here but the absolutely crucial role played by volunteers who have given up their spare time to maintain our Teign Valley home and prepare it for games. Heroes all.
Today’s star man was Lee Grant who came out early to cut and line the pitch. He was rewarded by seeing a family of deer come down into the long grass close to where we park our cars. This isn’t just a scenic cricket ground but a veritable nature reserve.
Lee was no doubt motivated to do the hard yards by being Captain for the evening. No stone left unturned and all that. But he was also a free man as Telma and Sophia had travelled off to Portugal to enjoy some sun. Telma obviously had the measure of the Teign Valley weather as she had dispatched Lee with two fine homemade towels for bowlers to dry the ball with.
Lee was soon involved in delicate negotiations with visitors Sunsets as they had turned up with 9 players; while we had 11 (good work selector Rick). Thankfully a solution was found when Mark Phillips volunteered to play for the opposition. This was not so painful for Mark as he is a long time Sunsets player too, being part of their original team after formation in 1995.
Mark was not the only familiar face in the opposition line up. Bradley Causey played for us against the Met Office and Lympstone earlier in the season. And also playing for Sunsets was the formidable John Buckland who we seem to be up against most weeks! We have already seen him turn out for Feniton and Tipton St John and in previous seasons Ottery St Mary too. Now Sunsets are added to the list. Has any player ever played for so many clubs against us? Over to you Fraser on that one.
Ok that has padded out the report to a reasonable length. My difficulty from here on in is I don’t have access to the scorecard. Not even a scorebook. The game was all recorded digitally and will be uploaded soon hopefully.
So in brief – Sunsets batted first and Buckland got to work immediately racing to a retirement score in no time. Things looked ominous. Mark Phillips, liberated by deciding not to wear a helmet, played some attractive drives before being caught and bowled by Fraser Chave. Our bowling attack continued to put the brakes on and limited Sunsets to 114-3.
Towards the end of the innings the long threatened rain arrived and continued as Erratics began their response. On other days there might have been a rush for cover but Sunsets are made of sterner stuff. Telma’s towels came into regular use but after a few overs of deluge one bowler commented that they were so wet that they were making the balls wetter rather than drying them. Meanwhile the Erratics not batting or umpiring cowered in the changing room where Jonathan Kirby made stalwart efforts to protect the scoring laptop from the downpour.
Erratics kept up a steady reply, never far from the required run rate but with little room to manoeuvre as the number of remaining overs seemed to be reducing at a rapid rate. The wet outfield slowed things up too. Buckland, swapped his wicket keeping pads for the ball but for once was not to be a total thorn in our side. Fraser batted superbly and I got to have a ringside view when joining him for the final run chase. A few boundaries and scampered singles put us in pole position and Fraser smashed the rather damp ball to the boundary with just 4 deliveries left. Captain Lee had joined Fraser for the final knockings and had a big smile as the winning runs were hit. All his hard work had paid off. Oh and it stopped raining!
