Stokeinteignhead v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 19 May 2024 at 17.30pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 13 Runs
Match report
Summary by Mark Hailwood.
This fixture started out as a 40 over game away at Newton Poppleford, but a double-booking mix-up left us looking for alternative opposition at the last minute. The indefatigable Mark Phillips always comes into his own when a crisis hits, and the call went out far and wide. It was answered by Roger Putnam, offering the unusual invitation of a T20 at 5.30 on a Sunday at Stoke-in-Teignhead. So, although one traditional Erratics fixture had been lost (odd to have no weekend game at Newton Pop this year now – didn’t we used to have four a season?!) another had been salvaged. The season cannot really be said to have started until we’ve played Stoke away.
Except this wasn’t the Stoke team of Putnam, Treeby, Inzy, Thornton-Clarke et al, but rather their South Asian affiliate side. Regular Erratics will know the Chackos from previous games against Stoke, and this was a team of mostly Indians, I think, many of whom had recently moved to the surrounding area, that the Chackos had brought together to start playing some recreational cricket. In other words, perfect opposition for the Erratics. And believe it or not the weather was actually perfect too – a warm, sun-drenched evening, with a hazy moor as a postcard backdrop.
And the two sides proved to be well-matched, in a game that felt less low scoring than it was, if you know what I mean. That was certainly the case when Stoke’s two big hitters, Shinto and Joseph Liyo, were together at the crease, putting on a display of clean striking not always on show in T20 onslaughts – well-timed hard-hit shots that used the middle, not mishit swipes with pumped-up super-bats, were their thing. One almost didn’t mind being hit for six by them. Almost. Their spate of boundaries were ultimately the difference in the game, but they might have put it beyond all doubt much earlier if it hadn’t been for a fine intervention from Paul Carr, bowling one with a jaffa and deceiving the other with a slower ball to put the breaks on. When Stoke finished on 96 all out from 18.2, we looked in it.
But whereas only two Stoke batters had managed to find the distant boundaries with any regularity, only one Erratic did, and that’s the short answer as to what went wrong. It was nice to see Rik Lindsay coming into some form though after a slow start to the season (which, to be fair, is how the season itself has started), and the highest elbow in Devon cricket (given his height, it does have a decent head start…) was in full flow here. The only other batter to threaten was Anuj, but by the time he came to the crease the rate was unrealistic, and the field deep, and our challenged petered out.
Still, no one was too upset. It was a fun game on a glorious evening when we very nearly had to go without one – and given the weather we’ve endured over the past few weeks (months) it was a joy to just be out there again. And now we've played Stoke away the season can really get going...
