Broadclyst v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 14 Jul 2024 at 1.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 3 Wickets
Match report
Sunday, 15th July, marked an important date on the 2024 calendar year: England playing in the Euros 2024 and the Erratics’ visit to Broadclyst at Killerton Park. The former meant that the start of the game was pushed to 1 PM so everyone involved could make it home in time for the much-awaited clash against the Spanish.
This fixture last year marked the first Erratics’ hundred in 4 seasons by Lee Grant, who seems to have fallen in love with this particular cricket ground. Chave Jr won the toss and decided to bat first. His highness Ben Yarde Bueller opened the batting with Oscar Cammack on the non-striker’s end. Having had a lengthy conversation with Ben about how batting specifically is a game of confidence and self-belief, your correspondent believed that this was the day when fortunes would change for both of us, but it wasn’t meant to be. Ben was dismissed in the first over, missing a full toss delivery that he'd have otherwise dispatched towards the boundary on any other day. Oscar followed soon, top-edging to the keeper. This gave the opportunity to the man of the hour, Lee Grant. Lee took off from where he had left off last year when he had scored an unbeaten 129. Lee raced to a 50 with his “biffs,” ably supported by Mark Hailwood, who looked in good touch until he was dismissed. Lee had some close shaves with the Broadclyst fielders. Watching him bat, we spectators firmly concluded that “if you hit the ball hard enough, it doesn't matter if there are fielders in the way” (happened thrice to your correspondent last year when he dropped Pete Weatherhead thrice in 3 overs). There was a brief discussion about telling Lee how close he was to his 100 as the skipper mentioned, “When he gets there, I can finally say I’ve retired him,” but all these worries disappeared when one of Lee’s “biffs” found the capable hands of Andrew Daldorph on the deep square leg boundary, agonizingly inches away from the boundary, and the Lee storm came to an end 3 runs short of a second Erratics’ ton. Your correspondent had a brief partnership with Chave Sr. as the Erratics reached a respectable 194 at the end of their allotted 35 overs, Andrew Daldorph being the standout bowler for Broadclyst, taking 4 wickets in 3 overs.
Oscar opened the bowling, with some outswingers from Duncan on the other end. It took Oscar the first couple of overs to find his rhythm, but when he did find his line, he was unplayable. Oscar dismissed Andrew, catching him off his own bowling. The other opener, Robert Meakings, played cautiously while keeping an eye on the required run rate. The skipper decided to introduce some spin in the form of Roger Putman and himself after brief spells from myself and Mark. This move worked as the Erratics chipped away with a few wickets. The skipper himself got two, Roger got one, and the leg-spinning masterclass of BYB resulted in 3 more. The required run rate was close to 9 an over, but with George Daldorph and the skipper, Phillip Walker Jr., on the crease, there was a very close shout of Phillip Jr. being stumped by Lee, which was firmly denied by the square leg umpire. The match went to the very last over, with Broadclyst needing 9 runs in the final over, which they managed to reach with 2 balls to spare. All in all, it was a much closer game than last year, even though we ended up on the wrong side of the result. It would be fair to say that cricket was the winner as everyone then headed home soon after to support England in their tryst with destiny.
