Match report
WELCOME
Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the memory of a cricket match.
Cricket is a scared and joyous covenant, which should be reported reverently.
Let us begin…
HYMN:
Our first hymn is number 991, sung to the tune of “Polly put the kettle on”:
Hymn 991:
Roger got the game back on
Roger got the game back on
Roger got the game back on
We all had tea
Fraser scored some runs again
Fraser scored some runs again
Fraser scored some runs again
We’ve all gone away
READING:
Our first reading is taken from the Book of Statistics, chapter 90, beginning at the 63rd verse:
“Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man;
and his number is counted in 6s and the number of them is 39, smote in a single season of man.
Yeah, though Lee Grant did beast the ball clear over the boundary rope not once but twice, this
28th day of September, his total for the season did rise only to 35. So it is that Chris Cook, 39,
remains the Beast Incarnate, while his Elder Son doth remain in third place with a tally of 29.
The prophets have long foretold that young Fraser Chave will one day take his place on high,
beside the two Christophers, they who have scored more than one thousand Erratic runs in a season.
But not this day. Fraser’s time is not yet come, for yeah, though scoring mightily, he did on this day
fall just nine runs short of said seasonal milestone.
Others did toil in the field. The Book of Numbers will surely tell of the great deeds done with the ball
by those who despatched the batters from Stoke-in-Teignhead. Alone among those batters, the
youngest seemed not to understand the meaning of the word ‘defeat’. He batted defiantly and
not without skill, indeed, skill and application rare in one who has seen so few summers.
But defeat was nonetheless visited upon him: Lo, the Ring of Power did swing from the ear above
the hand that plucked the ball from the air, and all things did come to an end.”
Here endeth the reading.
COMMUNION:
Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in the one ball - excepting when
said ball may be lost, or irretrievable from amidst the cattle lowing in adjacent fields, in which
case a second, or third ball may be shared.
Draw near in faith, and receive the ball that surely has thy number on it.
PRAYER:
We join together in prayer, saying the words our Wisdom taught us:
Our cricket, which art in Devon,
Erratic be thy name
Thy innings come
Thy will be done
With bat as it is with ball
Give us this day our allotted overs
And forgive us our dropped catches
As we forgive those who drop them off us
And lead us not into bad calls
But deliver us from run-outs
For thine is the umpire
The pencil and the scorebook
For ever and ever
Howzat?
HYMN:
Our final hymn is sung to the tune of “Adeste Fideles”:
Oh come, all ye faithful, Unicorns so rampant
Oh come ye, oh come ye to our winter meal
Come, won’t you join us to
Celebrate the season
Oh come for friendly cricket
Oh come for friendly cricket
Oh come for friendly cricket
Erratics have a ball
A collection plate is available for your offerings, as you leave. Thank you.
PS Apologies to those not familiar with Anglican rituals. And apologies to those who are.
