Erratics charge in,
Anuj’s swing bites the breeze,
Strong start from the pack.

Lee, with cunning line,
Two wickets, just six conceded,
Their top order cracks.

Fraser eyes the feat,
A hat-trick dream takes its shape,
Tension grips the field.

Phil with devil’s spin,
Nigel strikes, two more depart,
Strongroom looks unsure.

Sixty for six falls,
‘Too early for London, lads…’
But they dig their heels.

One edge flew to JK,
A bat? A noise? A strong case!
But gods stayed silent.

Seventy-three runs
From that lucky soul ensued,
The crowd groaned as one.

Next, poor Nigel struck
Plum in front, all raised a shout,
Umpire blinked. “Not out.”

But sweet vengeance came:
Off stump cartwheeled through the air,
Silence from the bat.

Then came the dry ground,
And with it Lee’s cruel misstep,
Ankle down, heart crushed.

Spikes snagged in dry turf,
Boundary save turned to fall,
Our captain grounded.

We turned then to bat.
One-six-seven? Doable!
Some faith yet remained.

Hope fell with a thud,
Score of fifty-nine, four ducks,
A loss by a ton.

Feathers everywhere,
If ducks wore suits, we’d go broke,
Finance spared, for now.

“Fun, yes,” someone said,
“But I’d like it more with runs…”
Echoed round the bench.

And Matt, oh poor Matt,
Caught by Anuj, our own man!
“Et tu?” he whispered.

Laughter filled the dusk,
Wounds soothed with pints and stories,
Bonds beat scorelines still.

Strongroom drove away,
Strong once more at Teign Valley.
We’ll return, renewed.
