Match report Erratics vs Bridford – 20th July 2025 at Teign Valley
‘No wickets …. No Runs’
Our local derby, the Erratics took on familiar foes Bridford in a 40-over clash which provided plenty of talking points, celebrations, and sporting gestures.
Erratics batted first after a negotiated toss, on a greenish and initially, an evil wicket. Richard and Hugh opened. Hugh ‘walking’ after the ball caught his glove and looped up to Bridford’s keeper and became the first of George Perry’s five-wicket haul. (8–4–16–5). Our George clipped a lovely four before becoming another Perry victim. Richard clipped one to deep square to be caught on the boundary. Enter JK, who is on a mission to keep scoring 50s; he nearly got there (45) – watch out, South Brent. Druhba becoming another of Perry’s wickets, Ollie Slyfield catching them both; the catch to dismiss JK particularly impressive. Druhba’s time was to come when bowling. Enter yours truly to try and form a partnership with young JK. It was initially a short stay. Until Bridford magnanimously called me back after being given out. Bridford played this game with true spirit and enjoyment. Roger didn’t trouble the scorers this time. His time also would come with ball in hand. Anuj arrived at the wicket, having informed me he was on a run of three (?) first ballers for the Erratics. Captain Fraser had asked him to use up the overs. He listened for two balls, and then let loose, 4, 6, 6, losing these two balls over mid-wicket and into the hedge. He kept going as Anuj does, trying to get himself out, but carried his bat for 83 N.O. Lee was next, becoming the third of Ollie Slyfield’s catches, and the fifth of Perry’s wickets. Enter Duncan in a pair of borrowed cricket boots, not allowing himself to be hampered by the fact they were two sizes too big, he was run out, though by some exuberant calling and running by Anuj, and so Fraser came to watch for one ball, and give a firm No to another call for a run by Anuj. Erratics closed their innings with a formidable 213- 9 in their 40 overs.
In reply, Bridford were bowled out for 184 in 38 overs, falling 29 runs short in an entertaining chase. Chris Mayes led the charge with 47, before becoming the second of George’s wickets. It's worth turning up to see George celebrating his wicket-taking! Then M. Walker kept the momentum with a powerful 53, including multiple boundaries, but was dismissed to become Druhba’s first wicket. (6.2 – 2 – 32 – 2). Druhba came back to finish the innings, initiating an edge to Lee. Roger followed his highest batting score for the Erratics, with his best bowling figures here (8 – 1 – 44 – 4). A true bowler grumbling as we left the field. “I can’t believe how many were taken off middle stump”
Lee and Fraser finished things off, Lee with a customary off-stump yorker, (5 – 2 – 6 - 1) not sure he was easing himself back from injury as a Jack Leach clone, though. Fraser saved himself until the end to polish off the innings (3 – 0 – 10 - 2), bowled one with his quicker ball and the usual slip catch by his dad, Duncan. Fraser, captaining with characteristic Erratics generosity, came in at number 11, allowing others to take centre stage. His bowling later would be a highlight, but his decision to bat down the order spoke volumes of his leadership style, in a match that had moments of comedic entropy, unlikely resistance, and ultimately, the quiet assertion of cricketing competence. The scorebook, now marked with the tilting hieroglyphs of wickets and runs, tells one story. But the deeper tale was of two teams playing in the spirit of their name yet triumphing with unexpected methods. There remained that ineffable satisfaction: the symmetry of effort, the camaraderie of competition.
Cricket, even at this humble level, retains its faculty to surprise. Hugh surprised Druhba as he drove straight past him and headed off, only to return and hopefully get Druhba home.
Bridford took the loss in good spirit, with a team reggae chant of “No wickets… No runs” to one of their own. Teign Valley once again proved why it's a favourite venue — beautiful ground, friendly faces, and a game that swung both ways.
“Don’t worry... ‘bout a thing… ‘Cause every little wicket… gonna be alright.”
This was a match full of character—on the pitch and in the scorebook. The Erratics march on with a well-rounded performance and a few stories richer.
