Match report
Phil Power to Report
“I just want a crap”
Playing at Clyst St George CC is always a pleasure; this game was tinged with sadness. We had heard that Peter Thomson had died that morning. Peter, an extraordinary man, so intelligent and mischievous, so caring, a lover of the game, taught of its aesthetic pleasures: elegance of form and delicacy of touch. Peter's attitude and opinions make nonsense of the metaphor by which our lives are said to reflect the seasons. He remained instantly recognisable as the softly spoken skipper and advisor who led the Erratics for a number of years (Peter was my first captain). The premise of competitive sport is that each match is a fresh start on a level playing field. That’s why we are free to enjoy it, to invest what we like in it, and to divest ourselves when it’s convenient.
Both teams stood either side of the pitch as we clapped for a memorable minute with the camera acting as wicketkeeper. Very, very moving, and a particular challenge for Duncan and Fraser to turn their minds to the game. The title to this was apparently Peter’s last words, Shakespearean to the end.
The Erratics posted 214/6 declared from 40 overs, built around a composed, unbeaten 60 from Chris Cook and a sparkling 65 off 54 from Lee Grant. Lee’s innings, laced with 13 fours and a six, set an early tempo after the loss of Duncan Chave for a duck, who must have been distracted and tired after the sad news. Brad Causey (25) and Jon Perkin (13) offered support, but the middle phase belonged to Clyst St George’s change bowlers. The Creer–Wilson axis applied a squeeze: B Creer’s 11 overs cost just 30 with two maidens and a wicket, while B Wilson was outstanding with 10-4-31-2, removing the dangerous Lee Grant (again) and Ben Yarde-Buller. Extras also kept Erratics moving. With 15 byes and 14 wides among 39 extras, the Erratics total swelled even as wickets fell at key moments: 43-1, 78-2, 149-3, 153-4, 209-5. Chris Cook anchored expertly to ensure a competitive finish at 214/6.
Clyst found a string of contributions that kept the rate in check despite wickets, with both Creer brothers retiring with 50s, built around some very aggressive shots.
Nigel and Lee began the bowling, and at one stage Clyst were 17-3. This grew to 100-4 as Asselman began the boundary onslaught. His removal by Lee brought Bertie Creer to the crease. They were following Clyst’s overseas player, who was intrigued by Fraser's announcement that he would be bowling ‘round and through’. Fraser removed him with his first very quick ball that completely took him by surprise. Fraser then did a similar job on Hemingway and Sivyer. It was left to Cragg and Bernie Wilson to wrap the game up for Clyst in 25.4 overs. Bernie out of character, driving the winning runs through long off.
My chats with Peter over the years were gloriously different from almost any conversation I have previously had about cricket. Before long it was very clear that you joined him in thinking about cricket. If your wits were in good order, it was always a privilege.
