Over the past few seasons that we have been playing Feniton, we have become used to their local micro climate. This year was no exception. So, observing the low looming clouds on the southwest skyline undoubtedly heading our way, the weather for that evening was one of the first topics of conversation between Erratics players as they arrived in the changing room. The next topic was a slightly heated debate about if one were to be visiting Northern Ireland, would one be "abroad" or not. It seemed as though this was going to turn into a Brexit conversation, but fortunately it did not. Now on to the cricket.

Feniton batted first, the Erratics taking to the field with only 10 players. After losing two wickets quickly to the opening bowling of Nigel Rutherford and Paul Carr, Feniton settled down to a long, steady and rapid scoring partnership by their numbers 3 and 4 who both reached their retirement limit. After that, the scoring continued at the same rate and it seemed that they would reach quite a challenging score. But, after 20 overs they had only reached 117 for 5, thanks to some economical bowling, especially by Nigel, Fraser and Lee. So it looked like a manageable target for the Erratics to chase. Not so!

In the break between the innings, we were treated to some local weather lore by members of the opposition. "You see those dark, low clouds over to the south west on that line of hills? In about two minutes from now we'll have blustery heavy showers right here!" This is what we have come to expect at Feniton. But, actually, on this occasion it wasn't quite so bad. Just a bit chilly.

The batting order for the Erratics innings was approached in a novel way, devised by captain Jonathan Kirby. Having confirmed that Richard Lindsay would be opening, he then asked Matt Crawford, Martin Weiler and Mark Phillips to sort out numbers 2, 3 and 4 to suit themselves. That all worked smoothly. This method can be recommended when the situation is not critical and the captain can allow some flexibility. The three of us welcomed it, anyway. I understand that the same policy was applied to another group of players further on down the order.

Feniton used 10 bowlers, 2 overs each. Looking at the bowling figures, there was obviously a lot of variation for Erratics batsmen to choose from. Martin and Matt took full advantage of this when they could and pushed the score on, to be followed later by Lee Grant rapidly reaching his retirement total in his usual swashbuckling style. Later on, there was a quick and effective flourish from Paul Carr which gave some slight optimism that we might get there, but we fell 19 runs short. This was a nice match, though, kept interesting by the result being unpredictable until maybe the last two overs and all played in the proper friendly spirit.
