Match report Mark Hailwood 'reports'...

On the North Devon Tour we like to adhere to the maxim ‘what goes on tour stays on tour’. This has two main benefits: its makes the tour sound far more debauched and intriguing than it really is, and it gives us an excuse to set aside match report duties for a few games, making it more of a holiday for those involved.

Still, we do try and do something to capture a bit of the flavour, so this year I asked the tourists to give me their highlights:
~ the performance highlight was the batting of Matt Crawford. Dismissed for 49 at Lynton on Saturday, he responded with a 50 at Bridgetown on Sunday.
~ there was some notable fielding too: ‘Rik "flypaper" Lindsay's three catches at Bridgetown’, for instance. But the standout fielding moment belonged to Pete Colclough: ‘performing what looked like a textbook long barrier while fielding at Valley o' Rocks, only for the ball to find an invisible chink in his armour, leaving him lying flat out on the field.’
~ we enjoyed our draw at Lynton, but not all of the oppo did: ‘(outside The Crown in Lynton) Fred Batt's face when Annie called him "mainstream" for not liking drawn games.’
~ we also enjoyed our visit to Bridgetown: the swifts at the pub in Winsford, the bridge, the tea, an hour spent reading in the sun before the game. Not so much their skipper giving himself a second bat which ultimately decided the game.
~ someone enjoyed seeing a nun in Lynton; we all chuckled at the fact that Phil had ‘pp’ on his cricket bag; JK managed to scatter himself over a large area, and to let his battery go flat at Morebath. Jon Perkin solved the mystery of the pyramids.
~ we finally made it to the London Inn and found it open (twice!) with no unforeseen circumstances. It was the first time since the maiden tour of 2017 that we had managed to get inside.
~ but the undoubted highlight was getting told off in the Valley of Rocks Hotel:
‘I think it’s time to say goodnight don’t you think?’
‘Good night then!’
‘Who said that?!’

And finally, this brilliant contribution from Phil, inspired by a breakfast conversation about the collective nouns for various birds as the swallows swooped overhead at the bunkhouse:

Anticlockwise

A gulp, flock or flight of barn swallows
A gulp, flock, flight, richness, or a cerclage of house martins
A scream, flock of swifts

A Rapunzel of Mark
A jump lead of Jonathan
A pyramid of Perkin
A towering of Rik
A triviaphile of Fraser
An ale of Matt
A spasm of Duncan
A tower bridge of Peter
A two, two of Martin
A scholarly of Jim
An eager of Will
A half Dutch of Ollie
An Annie of laughter
