Exwick v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 26 Apr 2026 at 1.30pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 67 Runs
Match report
Reporting by Nigel
Having spotted one of the Exwick team in an adjacent net a couple of weeks ago bowling some pretty spicy stuff I mentioned this to Ben, a fellow non helmet wearer, just before the start, and as we were pondering the merits of donning some headgear for the first time, Fraser sent us both out to open the innings. A couple of deliveries in a ball spat up off a length and thudded into Ben's elbow leaving him in some real discomfort for a couple of minutes . Soldiering on he produced a couple of sweetly timed shots through the covers before being undone by a grasscutter that donked him on the toe in front of the stumps.
The run rate was steady if not exuberant, but a pair of quick wickets opened an end( the other remaining stubbornly shut down)for in form batter Richard to inject some life into the innings. This he did with some serious panache. A flamboyant fifty brought up in no time, including two terrific pull shots. Best seats in the house for me at the other end and a treat to watch. The vehemence of my wife's cricket day mantra of " If you bat for God's sake don't do anything stupid" weighed more heavily than usual and seemed to constrain my ability to score any runs, so when, 35 overs in, my middle stump was knocked back there was a visceral sense of relief all round. Chris ,Lee and Harry tonked the ball around for the final few overs getting the Erratics up to to a reasonable 163, albeit twenty or so fewer than the captain would have liked.
Lee opened the bowling and once he had the length locked in, caused the batters all sorts of difficulties with his late inswingers. Chris tied down the other end in his inimitable way. Paul, once he'd blown the cobwebs out of the way, settled on a nice length with some good swing, bowling Tom JH with a beauty ,or so he thought. As Tom was heading back to join his team mates the umpire, after a brief moment of cogitation, signalled a no ball and Tom returned. A couple of balls later Paul did get his man. Next came a great spell from the spin twins, Harry and Ben. Both hitting a good length with their pacy leggies. Harry getting creative with some funky field positions, installing two short extra covers!. Ben snagged his first victim of the season with a cracking ball that flicked off the balls , eliciting the celebratory, " My first wicket with new hips"
John K. was chasing down his own milestone. One more stumping to put him in second place behind the legendary Keeper, Peter Thompson. Keen to get there J.K sensed his opportunity when a novice youngster out to bat for the first time came to the crease. Sure enough second ball, a wandering back leg, bails whipped off and square leg umpire's finger raised. A charitable no ball call from the Bowler's umpire, however meant a reprieve for the batter and that " runner up" position still to play for.
Exwick wickets had been falling at regular intervals and it looked like an Erratics victory was only a matter of time. That time would have to wait a little longer as we discovered what we thought we the final wicket was just a prelude to Tom J H's return to the middle. A catch from Chris and it really was all over.
Footnote : I managed to sustain injuries to my shin, hand and knee and lost half a toe nail during the day. When I hobbled through my front door my wife said " You head out for a gentle game of village cricket and come back like you've been on the front line. What the fuck is wrong with you? " A fair question.
