Cheriton Fitzpaine v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sat 27 Jun 2026 at 1.30pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 78 Runs

Match report Cherry Picking

The memorable moments and prosperity-bound passages of play from this game include:

A very tricky wicket (for batting) on which Martin Wright ground down the opposition bowlers with 18 runs from 62 deliveries. This set the stage for a late flurry of runs from Matt Crawford, 54*, in the form of his life, and Lee Grant who battered 43 from 34 balls. With Richard Lindsay’s contribution (same as the average age of the combat solider in Vietnam), this took the Erratics to a respectable 185 from 40 overs.

In reply, our old friends Nick Guscot and Jeremy Tricks contributed 28 runs apiece but lacked support, and Cheriton were all out for just 107 before the 30th over was finished.

But this is why the game will be remembered:

Duncan Chave took a classically beautiful slip catch off the bowling of Fraser Chave.

Mark Hailwood said “I want to do that, but I never get to field at slip.” So, captain Fraser put Mark in at slip, in place of Duncan, who was now bowling (toiling) up the hill.

Mark was sledged by Martin Wright, who was standing a few paces to his right. “I’m only here till I drop one” responded Mark.

He didn’t drop one. (Spoiler alert – the punchline is NOT that he dropped TWO, though that would have had some sort of comedy value, and given hope to Cheriton.) No, Mark didn’t drop one, he caught one! And his celebration was perhaps one of the champagne moments of the season – running with arms outstretched towards the bowler, like a Bristol City footballer who’s just stuck one in the net and then wheeled away to the corner flag, in amazement at himself, and chased by his teammates.

Now, who says lightning doesn’t strike twice? A few moments later, the exact same thing happened again! Mark now asserts that slip-catching is easy, and that he should field in that position all the time, except when bowling. Incidentally, he got 3 for 14 on this day.

Meanwhile, Duncan racked up 4 for 21, to add to his earlier slip catch. The last of these wickets was another, taken this time by Martin Wright, a catch later adjudged by the opposition as having been the most challenging.

Four slip catches, and another one taken behind the stumps. I guess you could say that, in this game, we had the edge.
