Match report
Matt Cook reports
We had a belter of a side against NP on Thursday, who by their own admission were not as strong as they might have been. Nonetheless they bowled well at us, and we ended with a chaseable total of 114. At one point we were almost smoked off – a great funnel on a westerly breeze drifted across the spectacle, confounding the fielders and as a corollary trapping the aroma of rotted leaves, rusty bedspreads and chemical intoxicants in their whites. We tried to make the most of the chaos by hitting to the smoked side of the wicket. Notable batting contributions from Prakash Kripakaran who made a disciplined yet vigorous start, Duncan – who spanked it, and debutant Peter Auguste, who cleanly square drove his first ball to the rope, and hoist a six straight into the bright white pavilion wall. Sooty finished our innings strongly with some sweetly-mown boundaries. Despite the positives, a combination of smart bowling and a lively wicket had caused problems for us all. This was soon to be reversed however. Some fantastically varied bowling from the Erratics left NP reeling. August turn from Peter, smooth swing from Harry Molins, levelled aggression from Gareth and Sooty’s sharp spitting spinners took wickets every other ball it seemed. Soon NP were all out; and I believe we won by 100 runs (i’ll let you do the maths). Peter and Sooty’s leg breaks (at differing trajectories), and Gareth/Harry’s raw pace made good use of the turf’s own jaunty re-anglings. NP’s batsmen were a little rash, but also a little unlucky, and were good about things despite the defeat. One youngster of theirs was certainly the most correct of all batsmen on show, and got them off to a start. Their customary hospitality was extended to us afterwards at the Cannon Inn, as we munched our way through two large plates of pizza and chips.
[Unfortunately no Erratics bowling figures are recorded for this remarkable effort. AN Other is unclear from the scorebook - looks like 'Wadel'? - AN Other1 is Peter Auguste]
