Ashburton v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 08 Jul 2015 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Ashburton makes rather a nice setting for an evening's Twenty20 cricket. Quite a small ground, but that's not such a bad thing when we only had ten players – and that was nearly nine, until Chris Cook came around the corner.
Ashburton batted first and their openers capitalised on a lack of swing for opening bowlers Dominic Prosser and Ben Youngman. There were chances but the runs totted up and it wasn't until the seventh over, with Chris Cook now bowling, when the first wicket fell, with Ashburton on 60. On course for around 200, wickets to Ben Y, two to Phil Power and another to Chris C brought the run-rate down and made the run chase seem less daunting. A bowling change saw Mark Hailwood unleash a tidy over before and even tidier one: dot, catch, catch and … bowled; then dot, bowled. A four-wicket maiden, including a hat-trick. A wonderful over, which might make it into his next edition of the Erratics book, which I believe you can pre-order here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1843839423 . (I do hope the link works.) Ashburton, all out in 14 overs, left Erratics chasing 115 for the win.
Ben Abrahams and Phil led the charge, but Phil soon made way for captain Chris Ferro. Ben A and Chris F put on a excellent display for awaiting batters Chris C and Andrew McRae, with Ben A also impressing Dan Thistlethwaite with his lengthy stride, while Mark marvelled at the sight of someone matching Chris Ferro's pace between the wickets. Ben A and Chris F produced a succession of classy shots against some efficient Ashburton bowling, which kept the runs flowing at the required rate. 103 reached in 17 overs. Over 18 saw Chris F pass 50 and then hit the winning runs coming with a third successive four. Chris F and Ben A left the field not out on 59 and 49, respectively.
As is tradition, we looked back on a game with many highlights. Then Chris C, Phil and Dan looked to the future, extolling the virtues of the Gloucestershire tour (27-30 August, by the way), which, apparently, includes such random activities as word disassociation, hit the golf ball over the river and land the cricket ball on the lamppost.
The win at Ashburton extends the Erratics winning streak to six matches. Oh, I've forgotten to include a quote: ``I wonder if we can make it seven...''
Ben Youngman.
