Match report
Young Wizards recapture the Goblet of Matravers
Fraser ‘Weasley’ Chave and Joe ‘Potter’ Thomson conjured victory for the Mystics and Magicians, winning back the Chairman’s Goblet in the penultimate match of their 2015 tour.
The Sorting Hat allocated ‘Windy’ Miller to the Erratics’ team of nine, (depleted by many of their regulars joining the Hogwarts School trip around the parallel universes of Cornwall and Devon), and selected the Erratics to bat first. Captain Mark Hailwood announced his intent by despatching Martin Sharland’s first ball to the boundary, but Weasley Chave was not in a mood to give anything away. With only 13 on the board he should have had Windy caught, but the ball seemed to remain invisible to muggle Weasley Senior, fielding at slip. Windy and Prakash Kripakaran prospered until, at 96 for 2, Jim Thomson had Prakash caught. Then, while Weasley kept one end spellbound, Potter was brought on to do his tricks at the other, routing the Erratics’ middle order. Potter dismissed Windy for an exciting 49, Gajendra Singh without score, and Martin Wright for a breezy 19. Weasley swapped ends but remained unplayable – it was as if he had put the Erratics into a trance! Jonathan Kirby, Sophie Florides and Ben Youngman were disposed of with the wave of his wand. Jeff Haynes was left to carry his bat (for 0) again, when Dominic Prosser was lbw, just four runs short of his half-century.
This was a day the young wizards graduated. Weasley took no prisoners with his spell of 14-4-30-3. Potter plundered his chamber of secret deliveries to return figures of 4-0-15-3.
165-9 looked a good 40 runs short of a winning score, especially with the Erratics having occupied the crease for less than 40 overs, allowing tea to be taken early.
When the M and Ms batted, the Erratics found the stumps obscured, as if by an invisibility cloak! Ben found them once, to dismiss Weasley for 22, but Sharland batted on … his philosophy anything but to stone-wall! The Erratics’ own young mistress of the art and (witch)craft of cricket, Sophie ‘Granger’ Florides, was the best of the bowlers, delivering a very tight first spell and then returning to make the breakthrough, dismissing Sid Thomson for 35. Alas, Granger’s sorcery came too late to save the Erratics. Derek Matravers was denied the honour of scoring the winning runs as Sharland stood within reach of his century: the six he needed eluded him but the single was all the M and Ms required to complete an impressive recapture of the Goblet. But rest assured, all the protagonists will be back for another volume in this saga next year.
Thanks to Sidbury for the delightful ground (and for Windy); thanks for the tea and the BBQ; and thanks for all the supporters. I don’t mind the occasional evening with nine players against ten, in a chill wind and light drizzle, on a remote windswept plateau, in the company of half a dozen sheep, … but it is really no match for a day like this, when spectators outnumbered players!
