Match report [There are some photos relating to this game in the photo galleries section of the website]

It’s been a pretty impressive season so far with a well above average number of victories. But it was down to earth with a shuddering bump at Chulmleigh.

The main debate on the way was the weather. According to most forecasts Armageddon was due about 6pm so the chances of a full game were not strong.

Chumleigh are a traditional friendly Club who delighted us by saying this would be a timed game. And as we only had ten players they also provided a substitute fielder all afternoon. In return Erratics Skipper Jonathan Kirby won the toss and asked the home side to bat (an act of true kindness as it meant if the rain predictions were right we would hardly get a bat ourselves).

Almost at the off some particularly dark clouds came over the ground and it looked like the forecasts might be about four hours out. But they passed over quickly only to return even darker towards the end of the innings. This time we felt drops of rain and assumed this was the big one. It wasn’t – the only big one was a massive rainbow!

Chulmleigh has a reputation for being a cold windy ground and it certainly started that way. But we were warmed up by spells of sunshine and a brilliant run out by Lucky Bandhu who saw off one of their openers with a superb throw when he had little more than one stump to aim at.

The host’s top order is notoriously durable and so it proved again with the top order supplying 16, 42, 51 and 67 not out. But all the Erratics bowlers stuck to task and the run rate never got out of hand. Ironically had it been a 40 over match we would have been pleased to have restricted Chulmleigh to 158-6. Sadly the timed arrangement meant four more overs which resulted in 50 more runs being added to the total.

Fraser Chave got a good long spell and returned 11-0-51-2. Other wickets went to Sophie Florides (1-38) and Chris Ferro (1-5). Chris also matched Lucky’s exploits with another impressive long throw run out.

Quite a few sixes were dispatched into the field next to the pavilion – all totally ignored by the flock of sheep lying there. They only really shifted when Lucky went to retrieve one big hit and judging by their movement he can be assured of a job as a shepherd if he wants one.

A sumptuous tea was served and maybe the Erratics, presuming the storm was on its way, over indulged. We certainly batted as if we had. We got off to a bad start and never recovered. The only question was would the rain and bad light save us. It certainly got very dark, Dartmoor disappeared in mist and it started to drizzle but never enough to tempt the umpires.

The bare facts are painful. Not one Erratic reached double figures, our skipper Jonathan top scoring with 8 (and batting with uncharacteristic restraint for over one and a half hours). Only Eighteen runs came from the bat. We tried to block as best we could but that just prolonged the agony. We were all out for 38 in the 27th over.

We did win one mini battle. We had rather impressively only conceded 5 extras two of which were leg byes. In comparison Chulmleigh generously provided 20 sundries including 14 wides and 5 no-balls. So we can claim we won the extra match.

However the scoreboard didn’t lie – although one dressing room wag had changed the spelling of Erratics to Erotics. We were well beaten; not even Erratic and far from Erotic.

So, tails between our legs, we decamped to the local inn where the winners were very magnanimous in victory. We had a quiet drink – all very different to the fare on offer after a Chulmleigh game in 1947. A poster in the pavilion promoted a Cricket Club Flannel Dance in the Town Hall. All for half a crown.

Oh and irony of ironies. On the way home the heavens opened and the much promised thunderstorm unleashed itself. All too late! Way too late!
