Cheriton Fitzpaine v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 02 Aug 2015 at 2.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 21 runs

Match report “Was there perhaps something of a laconic complacency about the Erratics’ fielding today? Did we imagine that whatever we let Cheriton Fitzpaine score, the batting juggernaut of our team would easily overhaul their total?”

In the mistaken belief that he was writing the match report, these were the questions I put to Mark Hailwood, knowing that he would need a quote of some sort with which to start it.

Truth be told, I don’t think our fielding was really any more Erratic than usual. No-one will be surprised to hear that we missed a few catches, or that the ball occasionally evaded the grasp of a fielder on the boundary.

However, the ball did also go to hand, most notably in the case of Lucky’s friend Shankar who held a spectacular catch on debut. It’s to be hoped we’ll see a lot more of him. A second champagne moment was provided by Krups (sic), with a laser-like run-out, hitting one stump from distance at cover point. Skipper Martin Wright also managed to work his way through seven bowlers, ensuring that everyone got into the game, and on what the notes in the scorebook tell me was a “gorgeous, breezy summer day”, a total of 226 to chase down did not seem overwhelming on one of the smaller grounds on which we have the joy of playing.

The total might have been higher, had it not been for the final 10 overs, bowled by Lucky (unlucky not to get wickets and who bowled the only 3 maidens in the innings) and Nigel, who enjoyed the novelty of coming on as third change, picking up 4 wickets for just 21 runs. Commiserations, of sorts, to Grant Squire who, as a result of this parsimonious spell, finished on 98 not out.

After an excellent tea, our innings began according to Martin’s masterplan. At the half-way mark, we were 106 for 1, Krups having just departed unexpectedly having struck 62 excellent runs in a partnership of 101 with Ben Abrahams who was eventually bowled by Guscott for a very correct 36. Martin moved along breezily, but then began the series of unfortunate events…

First, Martin did an “Alistair Cook”, hammering the ball to square leg, only to deposit it in the midriff of the only fielder within miles, who managed gratefully to hang on to it. Then Lucky absolutely murdered a straight drive which was 4 all the way but for the fact that the despairing bowler deflected it with his fingertips onto the stumps that Nigel had just left behind him as he backed up; a horrible way to go. Finally, another new Erratic, Tom Wilson, contrived to run himself out, having struck some promisingly lusty blows. With that, from having had a reasonable platform, we were in trouble and the odds were now stacked heavily against us.

In truth, although well-placed for a final push, we hadn’t really kept up with the run-rate, and had never been ahead of it. Credit has to go to the Cheriton Fitzpaine bowling for this, and their field placings (take a bow, Mike Foan).

With a rate of 10 per over required from the final 5 of our innings, there was not much to do but go in an swing. Sadly, this yielded nothing more exciting than a hat-trick for Paul Brearley and although Mark Hailwood and Ben Youngman finished briskly, those final 5 overs yielded only half the required runs.

On a medical note, Cheriton Fitzpaine also beat us by two hamstrings and a “seizing-up” to just one older hamstring injury.

But (note, Guy Clarke, opening with a conjunction…), it had been a competitive game, played in a lovely setting, with friendly and sporting opposition. In a 40 over game, someone has to lose, but it was definitely great to have taken part.
