Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
The Millers' Tail, by Geoffrey Chauc-cott
'Tis a longe way to the middell', quod I,
'Tis yet further backe', came the wittie reply,
Twas the quip of umpyre John Somers, an Erratic of olde,
and a fittinge start for this storye to be tolde.
A newe fixture out neare Hony-ton,
and one, deare Erratics, we shouldeth have won.
Twixt a river and a farme the pitch doth lie,
The grasse is spongey, and the ball bounceth high.
The noble Fraser out to open did goe,
with the poor scholer Hayl-woad in towe,
The former droveth with grace, but soone was caught,
The scholar swep-ed a sixe, to a boundary that was short.
Yong Abrahams and Sir Matthew of Cook,
continued to scoreth with cutte and with hooke,
Ye total of all ye batting endeavour?
One hundreth and thirtie. Could our fine hostes do bettor?
It seem-ed not at early appraisal,
but there was to be a stinge, from the Millers' Tail.
Ben the Youngman and Ny-gell, the rate did restricte,
and the batting men did fall behind the required six.
Alas! The tighte bowling did endureth not,
offering the Millers many a shotte,
Each new batsman seem-ed taller to growe,
and despatched many a boundary with a mightie blowe.
We toiled in vaine, as ye scoreboard over did tick,
Seeing it so well, they could have batted with a roo-barbe stick.
Ye corry-doore of uncertaintee we could not find,
with but five overs left we were in tighte binde.
Bolwinge averages in tatters were left,
as the tail wagged and sixes were heft.
And as a bolte from the blue our ruin was smote,
An ambush! We fetch-ed our coates.
Our vanquishers show-ed their noble largesse,
and served us with chillee, the paineth to lesse.
Under a pinketh sunsette we supped Thatcher's Gold
and wished a rematch next yeare, a chanceth for our honour to uphold.
[Is scholar Hayl-woad the 'real' Geoffrey Chauc-cott? Only an academic sub-discipline could answer that question...]
