Bridford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 01 Jun 2005 at 6pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 2 runs
Match report
A pleasant, if cloudy evening. Bridford's al-fresco facilities, and the sight of many players disrobing in the grass, was enough to cause strong men to blanch. The crowds that had gathered in the hope of seeing Brian Carpenter throw another wobbly were disappointed; Brian had opted for the more sedate charms of Chumleigh on Saturday (alas, now cancelled).
The match itself came to an exciting climax, with Erratics just failing to get the four runs required off the last ball. The Bridford innings was characterised by the usual maddening Erratics performance in the field. Varied bowling, sometimes brilliant sometimes abysmal ground fielding, and the tendency to turn ones into twos or fours all combined to produce a good, but reachable Bridford score of 130. On the plus side, there were five catches, a promising debut by Kirby behind the stumps and Knappett's lively bowling.
The initial reply was steady, if unspectacular. Brunt's timing was impeccable, but at 69 -1 he was out to a lifting ball. At this point Kirby and Knappett seized the initiative. Kirby was, as usual, uninhibited, taking two sixes and a four off one over. The target was reduced to 18 off three overs. However, when he had reached 45 Kirby was caught on the boundary and although Knappett continued to push for victory, Erratics fell just short of the required total.
