Nomads v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 08 Jun 2005 at 6pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 5 runs
Match report
Finally arrived - a lovely summer evening for cricket - and the beautifully proportioned surrounds of the Killerton pitch. The match proved to be yet another nail-bitter...
Killerton
The Nomads batting first provided stolid resistance to some excellent tight
bowling by Carl Knappett and John Curtis.
Despite several near misses the openers survived until - finally a wicket - a sparkling run-out courtesy of Martin Weiler who in inimitable style swooped, threw and hit the stumps from an attempted quick single. After this, however, the Nomads batsmen made full use of the eccentric geometry of the pitch, hitting shots to and over the club house boundary positioned close to the wicket. The Killerton layout is clearly deliberately designed to increase interest for both batters and spectators. Taking pot-shots at the Tangle-foot beer bottles aligned on the club house patio tables seemed to be a particular favourite of the home side although they could have been aiming at their team mates. Late bowling from the Erratics, was marked with some interesting spin from Matthew Dyer and seam bowling from Gabriel Rogers - both newcomers to the team. John Pearson bowled very well and captured a well-deserved wicked - a catch by Jonathan Kirby who kept wicket very well. At the end of their innings the Nomads, however, had amassed an impressive 135 runs from the 20 overs.
Faced with the formidable target the Erratics approached the task admirably. The opening pair started well but the kamikaze running style eventually did for newcomer Gabriel Rogers. Ken Horne and Carl Knappett then set about the task of quick run making well with Ken eventually falling for 25 runs. Knappett continued to bat formidably pushing the Erratics ever nearer the required total, assisted (amongst others) by Jonathan Kirby who batted well for his 18 runs. In the final over late arrival Dominic Prosser was left with the hapless task of hitting two sixes of the last two balls to tie the match. The penultimate shot sent the ball merrily over the boundary where it was fielded by an ancient oak tree. So once again a last ball cliff-hanger leaving us needing a six to tie. It was not to be. Once again Erratics finished second in an exciting 'last-ball' duel with (again) Carl Knappett distinguished and undefeated .
Match Report by Martin Pitt.
The evening ended with a ceremonial fly past by powered hang-gliders, which we would like to believe was arranged in honour of the notable encounter.
