Staverton v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 26 Jun 2005 at 2pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
by Carl Knappett
Sun, a touch of cloud, and close enough to favour some early swing. Yet the Staverton openers were challenged more by movement off the pitch than through the air, with balls seaming side to side, breaking through the top and popping up with a puff of dust, or shooting along the straw-coloured strip.
In these conditions, the visiting side concentrated on staying in, resulting in a modest score of 60 or so after 20 overs.
This slow start was in no small part thanks to the efforts of James Burrows who, when not steaming in from the Shed End, was fielding with great courage, one cracking drive from their number 3 leaving a neat purple seam impressed upon his forearm (see picture). The fielding all round was pretty un-Erratic, with some catches actually held, and good ones at that. With the ball Dominic Prosser offered a cunning spell, using the erratic bounce to good effect, with Cooks senior and junior contributing handily (Sam Cook 4-12-1).
Some late hitting pushed the Staverton total up to 166 off 40, which seemed gettable. Or perhaps it was just the heat of the sun and the pollen from the tall stands of grass dizzying the senses. The Erratics openers – Mileham and Kirby – found the going tough, perhaps due to the hallucinogenic effects of Thomas’ cakes and Carpenter’s sandwiches.
Wickets falling steadily and run rate plodding sleepily, Prosser upped the ante with some fine pulls, one of which savagely dissected two postgraduate guests sat dreamily on the boundary. The dangers of attending to the waxy red ellipse of picnic Babybels rather than the hard red orb of the game. Colourful of garb, sporting pink, lemon and teal, these students of the Classics soon had one visiting fielder’s mind swimming with their equally colourful language.
Back to the wicket. Prosser’s brave strokeplay soon cost him dear, but Cook snr was there to mastermind the run chase, picking off ones and twos before launching into some heftier blows, testing the structural integrity of the ‘pavilion’ roof, and indeed the building as a whole, with a thudding straight six. Batsmen continued to come and go, providing only very temporary company, but Cook snr, undeterred, put paid to Staverton’s hopes with a glorious six in the final over. A fine way to round off a marvellous day of cricket, topped only by the jugs of ale at the Manor Inn.
